Seed Image / Origin Prompt: The idea for this short story came from a writing prompt that became the title:Open For Business. My immediate, unshaped thought was not of a shopfront, but of a private unveiling—a performance. The image that formed, fully detailed, was of a woman kneeling on a black-and-white checkerboard floor, wearing only a structured basque, the hard lines of the garment contrasting with the soft fall of candlelight. A pose of offering, but also of defiance. The space felt intimate, charged, theatrical. It was not about commerce, but about transaction of a deeper, darker kind.

From Image to Atmosphere:That image demanded a specific world: Paris, but not the postcard version. A Paris of rain-slicked cobbles, closed courtyards, and rooms that hold their breath. The atelier—Atelier Elise—became a natural container. A place where the craft is the careful containment of the body, and by extension, the self. The candles from that first mental picture never left; they became the story’s primary light source—flickering, unreliable, revealing and hiding by turns.

Narrative Approach & Style:I wanted to write against my own grain. My usual prose can be overly lavish. Here, the goal was economy: short, precise sentences. A scalpel, not a brush. The point-of-view is tightly third-person, clinging to Elise, so the character emerges not through verbose description, but through the relentless accumulation of her internal observations—her measurements of the world, of Julien, of herself. The plot moves rapidly; there is no spare flesh on this narrative. It’s all tendons and bone.

Character Orbits: Elise and Julien are not partners in a dance; they are two obsessive bodies caught in a gravitational pull.

Eliseis defined by control—over her space, her craft, her grief. Her arc is the systematic dismantling of that control, not by force, but by a terrifyingly recognized desire.

Julien is defined by memory—a memory that has calcified into a singular, destructive focus. He doesn’t want to save her; he wants to meet her, in the ruin of who they both were/could be.

Their progression is a tightening spiral. Each chapter brings them closer, not through sweet confession, but through the removal of another barrier—a professional rule, a social norm, a physical boundary.

Genre & Expectations: On its surface, this flirts with a conventional romance: older woman, younger man, Parisian setting, charged glances. I let that template stand because the deviation from it is the point. This is a story about the violence of being truly seen, and the greater violence of wanting it. The romance novel structure is the velvet lining inside which a much sharper blade is hidden.

A Note on the Ending: The story earns its final turn. The prose, which has been so restrained, must finally stare directly at the collision it has been orchestrating. It becomes graphic because the characters have arrived at a point where language fails and only the physical—specific, unflinching, consequential—can articulate the truth of their transaction. It is not explicit for the sake of shock, but because anything less explicit would be a lie. The reader is warned not because they should look away, but because they should understand the stakes before they step inside.

In Essence: “Open For Business” is about what happens when the private self hangs a sign in the window. It is the story of an arrival, a measurement, and a combustion—all lit by the same small, persistent flame.
