Prologue
The laptop begins feeling hotter against my legs; that's when I suddenly realize...I have been working late again. My head feels heavy, my eyes are tired. Still, I turn to the window pleading silently to be dark outside, so I can finally crawl into bed.
The tiny golden light is already showing.
Fuck.
I grab my phone. 7:02 a.m.
Why did I have to agree to see May for breakfast?
Once at the restaurant. May keeps giving me details about what she expects me to do and wear as her maid of honor. I'm excited to see her walk down the aisle. Of course it is a honor —but my head is killing me. My shaky hand grabs the cup of coffee as firmly as I can.
-Jay was wondering if you'd mind walking with his bestfriend-she drops the comment innocently.
My shaky hand finally stops. Or more like...I freeze completely.
-It's fine-I smile.
-Unless, you have someone you want to bring-she adds playfully.
-I don’t have a lot of time lately to find dates, May-my lips search for the coffee to warm my voice.
I try not to think about how much she has pushed me to date, so I could bring someone to their wedding. May's blonde locks frame her shy smile. I know she knows she is pushing me-I remember Jay's friends being nice, I really don't mind walking with one of them.
-Have you tried using an app?-she forces the question.
-I have my own app, May.
-Your app is for couples, not for finding a date.
-Touché.
-Honey, most of Jay's friends are taken-she finally admits the real reason of why she wants me to bring someone-and their girlfriends are not really excited to think about you having to be close with their...
-It’s only walking down the aisle through the church—I interrupt, a little ruder than I meant to.
—Zey—she pauses. A cold pause.—Don’t get me wrong, but I understand them. You’re the most wanted bachelorette in the city.
—It’s only PR—I do my best not to roll my eyes.
My recent fame as one of the best app developers has given me a reputation. But it is as fake as the nails on my fingers. Most of the guys I have dated rather keep me as a friend than even have casual sex with me.
Yes, on social media, on magazines, I may be the most wanted bachelorette.
Yes, I am smart, good at business, pretty, and kind of rich.
But also, I am a walking headache.
What those posts, interviews, and headlines don't say is that I am too much. I tend to talk too much. I am too noisy, too childish, too nerdy, too girly. Most guys are done with me once they realize I am a full-on extrovert.
Even my own app has been created because of me—to understand why the hell my old relationship didn't work. That was the original idea, at least. It has grown like wildfire, but I still don't have the strength to face the truth about why my almost-marriage fell apart.
Well… not completely out of nowhere.
My app was built on one simple idea: It’s never out of nowhere. I’m here to help you realize how to prevent the breakup.
After breakfast, May—still trying to steal me from my packed schedule—starts playing around on my Bumble.
—I’ll find you a nice guy—her blonde locks frame her smile as she tilts her head.
—The hard part is getting to the second date.
—Did you know there are many couples on here?—May’s eyes widen as she shows me a profile. “Jen & Roger.”
—A lot of couples try polygamy—I shrug.
Her fingers keep scrolling. Suddenly, she stops.
—Oh my God, look!—her high-pitched voice makes a couple of people turn toward us. My cheeks burn from the attention.—This one has a nice position, speaks four languages, goes to the gym, loves animals, and likes the cartoons you watch.
—Anime, May. Anime—I correct her as I take the phone.
My jaw drops.
—He’s thirty-two.
—I know, May—my voice cracks slightly as my gaze fixes on the photos.
Light brown hair.
Honey-colored eyes.
A dimple in his chin.
A menacing aura radiating through the screen.
—He’s Felix.
—That’s what the profile says.
—He’s Eydan’s friend.
As I let the information sink in, May lets out a long sigh.
—Why?—she groans—Why is the best man I’ve found for you the friend of your ex?
