Chapter One – The Girl No One Notices
I write because it’s safer than speaking.
People don’t interrupt pages. They don’t laugh when you pause. They don’t look at you like you’re strange for thinking too much.
I sit in the back row of Room 214, third desk from the window, where no one ever looks unless they’re staring outside. That’s where I’ve always been – present, but invisible.
The bell rings, and chaos erupts.
Laughter. Shouting. Chairs scraping the floor.
I keep my head down, fingers wrapped tightly around my notebook. Not the pink one. Not the blue one. The black one.
My diary.
No one knows about it. No one knows that inside these pages are thoughts I’d never say out loud. Fears. Dreams. A version of me that doesn’t shake when she speaks.
“Move.”
The voice hits me like a shove.
Low. Lazy. Confident.
I look up slowly – and my heart trips over itself.
Jaxon Reed.
The bad boy. The rumor. The mistake every girl makes at least once.
He’s standing in front of my desk, jacket slung over one shoulder, dark eyes locked on me like he’s trying to figure out why I exist in his space.
“I – sorry,” I mumble, quickly pulling my chair in.
He smirks.
Not cruel. Not kind.
Interested.
That’s worse.
“You’re Elara, right?” he asks.
My breath stutters. He knows my name?
I nod.
His eyes flick down to the notebook clutched against my chest. “You always write like your life depends on it.”
Heat crawls up my neck. “It’s just… notes.”
He chuckles. “Sure it is.”
Behind him, I hear Tyler laugh. “That her?”
Jaxon doesn’t turn around. His gaze stays on me.
“Yeah,” he says casually. “That’s her.”
Something about the way he says it makes my stomach twist.
Like I’ve just been chosen for something I didn’t agree to.
Jaxon leans closer, lowering his voice.
“See you around, Elara.”
As he walks away, my hands tremble.
I open my diary and write one sentence with shaking fingers:
Something bad is about to happen to me.
I just don’t know yet that he’s the reason.
