Chapter 1: The Inheritance

Diana Crawfield stood in the dusty study of her late aunt's old Victorian-era house, surrounded by boxes and trunks filled with old relics and forgotten memories. The air was thick with the scent of decay and nostalgia. Her aunt, a renowned occultist, had passed away a few weeks ago, leaving Diana a mysterious letter and a key to Cornick Manor.

The letter read:

"Diana,

If you're reading this, it means I've left this world behind. I was warned not to go to Cornick Manor, but I couldn't resist the whispers. Now I'm paying the price. Find the truth about the Cornick curse. It's the only way to break it... and protect yourself.

Yours,

Aunt Emilia"

Diana's eyes widened as she read the cryptic message. Whispers? What whispers? And what curse? She had so many questions, and Cornick Manor seemed to be the only place to find answers.

She arrived at Cornick Manor, a sprawling gothic structure on the outskirts of town, and stumbled upon an old, dusty room filled with her aunt's research on the Cornick family. A yellowed envelope caught her eye, with a single word scrawled on it: "Erebus".

Inside, she found a handwritten page with a cryptic passage:

"When shadows dance upon the wall,

Seek the key in darkness' thrall.

The Lord of Night's eternal guest,

Awakens with the blood of the unrest."

Below the passage, a smaller note read:

"Use the Cornick dagger. Be careful, Diana. Some doors are better left unopened."

Diana's heart skipped a beat as she realized the passage was a summoning ritual. She found the dagger, an ornate and eerie piece, and decided to attempt the ritual. She spoke the words, and the air seemed to shift. The room plunged into darkness, and Diana felt a rush of wind. When the lights flickered back, a figure stood before her, his eyes burning with an otherworldly intensity.

The figure took a step forward, and a low, gravelly voice spoke: "You shouldn't have called me. The night is not kind to those who disturb its shadows."
