Chapter 1: The Green and the Gloom

The air in Forks, Washington, was the same oppressive, gloomy green cliche Evera remembered. It pressed down, heavy with the scent of wet pine and deep earth, a complete contrast to the sharp, clean, magically charged air of Hogwarts.

Evera Swan stood on the worn porch of the familiar house, her gaze scanning the perpetually overcast sky. The silence, broken only by the distant squawk of a raven, was profoundly unsettling. She was dressed in her standard uniform of comfortable rebellion: a fitted black and emerald-green lace-up corset over a skin-tight, off-the-shoulder long-sleeved black top, tucked into black, 'worn out' flared jean pants, all anchored by scuffed black combat boots. Her dark brown hair, long and straight, caught the faint light, framing her startling hazel eyes that held far more green than brown.

She’d sent Roma, her white and brown Northern Saw-Whet Owl, to the Malfoy Mannor a few days before arriving to forks. Draco promising to take care of her.

The door creaked open, and Charlie Swan stood there, looking even more awkward and barrel-chested than she remembered. He was clutching a half-drunk mug of coffee, his uniform slightly rumpled.

“Evera. You… you look good,” he managed, his voice thick with unpracticed affection and relief. His gaze flickered to her single left nose stud and the intricate silver map of piercings climbing her ear, but he said nothing, respecting their long-standing truce about her style.

“Thanks, Dad. You haven’t changed at all,” Evera replied, giving him a genuine, if brief, hug. She slipped her arm out of her jacket for a moment, letting the leather cool her skin, before quickly pulling it back down over the faint, swirling black lines of the Death Mark tattooed on her inner arm—a dark relic of her complex, dangerous past with Draco.

“Isabella will be here next week some time,” Charlie mumbled, glancing at the empty front yard. “Has she contacted you?”

Evera shook her head no. The mention of her twin sister immediately created a thin sheet of ice between them. They had never been close, and despite sharing a birth date, they were far from identical twins; their hair color was the only physical trait they truly shared. Where Bella was pale, clumsy, and perpetually uncomfortable, Evera was vibrant, moved with a fluid grace, and possessed a quiet confidence that drew people in like a magnetic field. This difference, coupled with Evera’s higher academic success, striking beauty, and natural ability to be favored by almost everyone, had fueled Bella’s deep seated resentment for years.

Charlie, trying his best to be impartial, simply favored the child who didn't seem miserable around him.

Charlie had known about Everas second life at hogwarts and was happy for her but decided to be silent instead of asking how school was. Not wanting to bring up recent memories of the war.

“I’m heading to school today, Dad. Need to get the schedule sorted,” Evera said, retrieving her iPhone from her pocket. A new notification had pop up that read ‘Draco’ next to a photo of the two of them making silly faces. Evera had gifted Draco a iPhone just 3 months before leaving the wizarding world, and of course she taught him how to use it.

Draco: Did the locals flee in terror at the sight of actual style? Report, Swan.

Evera: Calm down, Ferret. It's too early for dramatics. Just walking to the Ministry of Mundane Education now.

Charlie frowned slightly at the phone, but Evera was already halfway out the door. “Be careful, kid. Don’t cause trouble.”

"Trouble always finds me, Dad," she murmured, pulling her heavy jacket tighter against the drizzle.

•••Forks High•••

Forks High School was a low-slung building painted in a depressing shade of beige, surrounded by perpetually wet asphalt. Evera navigated the crowded, echoing hallways with practiced ease. She had spent six years in the labyrinthine, ancient halls of Hogwarts, the great wizard war; this was simple.

She retrieved her schedule, book list, and a teacher sign-in sheet from the office, tucking the thin papers into the inner pocket of her jacket. Her classes included Advanced Placement Literature, Spanish III, Trig/Calc, Physics, and Biology.

It was in the first period, AP Literature, that she made her first contact. The class was small, and Evera chose a seat in the back, pulling out a slim, black journal and a fountain pen.

A lanky boy with thick glasses and nervously combed hair practically tripped over his own feet to get to the desk adjacent to hers. He was Eric, the school’s self-appointed technology guru and yearbook editor.

"Hi," he breathed, adjusting his glasses. "I'm Eric. You must be the new… Evera. I’m the eye of the storm. The nexus of all social activity."

Evera lifted an eyebrow, a slight, slow smile touching her lips. "Is that a fact, Eric? Well, Eric, I’m Evera. And I just transferred from a boarding school in Scotland. I’m afraid my knowledge of local social nexus points is severely lacking."

"Scotland? Wow. Like, kilts and bagpipes?" Eric leaned in conspiratorially. "I can put you in the yearbook. Page three, maybe? 'New Girl from Across the Pond.'"

"How about 'Evera Swan: Prefers Black to Bright Colors and Has Seen More Interesting Things Than Forks High's Lunch Menu'?" she countered, the dry wit catching him off guard.

Eric laughed nervously, but genuinely. "Okay, okay, I like you. You've got an edge. Are you doing the video announcement segment? Because I need someone to read the weather report and you sound amazing."

Evera’s eyes, bright green in the fluorescent light, assessed him. He was harmless, eager, and clearly desperate for someone new to impress. "Maybe, Eric. Just maybe."

The effortless way she made this connection—not by trying, but by being her engaging, slightly aloof self—was the key to her social magnetism.

Throughout the morning, her presence continued to draw attention.

In Spanish III, the class that would change everything, she was seated near Angela Weber. Angela was tall, quiet, and possessed a calm, deeply kind demeanor.

"Hi, I'm Angela," she offered, smiling warmly. "I hear you and Bella are twins? Do you look alike? I mean like, exactly alike."

"We're fraternal. I got the better end of the genetic stick, apparently," Evera said with a self-deprecating but confident smile. "It's nice to meet someone who doesn't seem terrified of me, Angela."

"You've got that whole 'I might secretly be a rock star assassin' vibe," Angela giggled softly. "It’s cool and I promise nobody hates you well maybe most of the girls here but the guys are all taking about you."

Evera felt a genuine connection. Angela was good. "I'll take that as a compliment I guess." She laughed

In trigonometry, a girl named Jessica Stanley, who was bright, chatty, and slightly insecure, immediately tried to sit near her. "Your jacket is seriously amazing! Where did you get it? Are you like, a musician?" Jessica peppered her with questions, drawn to the aura of cool Evera exuded. Evera answered politely, offering just enough detail to keep Jessica engaged without revealing too much.

During Physics, Evera, who excelled in complex theory, found herself paired with Tyler Crowley, a popular, slightly clumsy boy. He spent more time apologizing for knocking equipment over than discussing vectors. Evera, with her knack for clarity, quietly helped him organize the data, earning a look of grateful, awestruck admiration.Evera even notice an extremely beautiful girl in the back who stared down the back of her head the whole period. She also noticed the physical differences she had compared to the rest of the normal humans Evera has encountered. She made a mental note to keep an eye on her.

🍷 Biology

When Evera Swan walked in, the initial reaction was like every class before then. The silent stares conveyed a mix of raw emotions across the classroom: interest, lust, envy, jealousy, and curious scrutiny.

She chose an empty lab table, pulling out her notebook, but the air immediately thickened as Edward Cullen, entered the classroom, rigid and perfect, took the only empty seat, which happened to be beside her.

Edward didn't move his head, yet he was looking directly at Evera. His perfect, pale face was a study in shock. His pupils had contracted almost out of existence, leaving only a thin ring of molten gold around a depthless black.

Edward didn't just see her; he was instantaneously and violently overwhelmed. The mundane school air was replaced by a staggering, narcotic vapor that hit him like a physical blow. It was the scent of vanilla, salted caramel and burnt wood, underscored by the painful sweetness of a blood signature he never knew existed.

It was absolute. It was singular. It was the only scent that mattered in the universe, an unbearable, beautiful symphony that screamed of his ultimate desire.

He knew, with a certainty that erased centuries of his existence, that the girl with the dark clothes and the fiercely beautiful hazel eyes was his blood singer. His destined lure.

A low, involuntary sound escaped his lips—a barely suppressed growl. His hands clenched into fists beneath the lab table, his knuckles white against the pale marble of his skin.

Evera, sensing the change, slowly turned her head. Her intense gaze met his, and the immediate, staggering intensity of his focus made her magical instincts roar to life. This was not a boy; this was something ancient and predatory.

She didn’t flinch. Instead, she offered the slightest, most challenging lift of her chin. She was Evera Swan, former Slytherin, former Death Eater, and she would not be intimidated by a pretty boy, no matter how profoundly unnerving his stare.

Edward felt the challenge, and it only intensified the agonizing pull. She wasn't just his blood singer; she was fire and steel.

He struggled, forcing his gaze away from her, fixing it on the scarred surface of the desk. Control. He had to breathe the stale air, not her intoxicating scent. He had to be stone, not the raging, desperate predator she had awakened.

Evera watched him struggle, a knowing, dangerous curiosity sparking in her eyes. The mundane nature of Forks High had just vanished.

The final bell of the day was a shrill, unpleasant sound, slicing through the agonizing tension in the Biology room. Evera moved slowly, packing her textbook and notebook, giving herself time to process the confrontation that she now knew was inevitable.

The heavy weight of her carved, dark wood wand, slipped into an inner sleeve pocket of her jacket, was her only tangible anchor to a world that made sense.

She was the last student to walk out. Edward Cullen had been the first to leave, jumping out of his seat unnervingly fast just before the bell rang and sprinting out the classroom door.

Evera stared at the space he had vacated in disbelief, not at his unwarranted rudeness, but at the fact that everything about him screamed danger and definitely not human.

Evera walked briskly out to the student parking lot, pulling her hood up against the drizzle. She found Charlie's cruiser idling by the curb.

“What took you so long, kid?” Charlie asked, giving her a quick, concerned glance.

“Hey, Dad, I was just returning my check-in sheet,” Evera said dryly, slipping into the passenger seat.

She pulled out the bulky iPhone while Charlie pulled out onto the road. A string of messages from Draco had already arrived.

Draco: Potter sent me a Christmas card. A picture of him that ginger monstrosity. I assume this is your fault.

Evera: I merely suggested it would be a very Slytherin form of torment lol.

Draco: Well, naturally... But that’s not why I’m texting. I spoke to Father about a case that didn’t sit right with me.

Evera: lmao and what would that be?!

Draco: you texted me earlier today and said you were walking. That’s unacceptable! So we did something…

Evera: Ferret… what did you do?! Mister I swear to Merlin!!!

Draco: we got you a car!! I know you don’t like crazy expensive gifts, but it should be there by tomorrow morning!

Evera: omg Draco, you’re joking. You better be joking. I can’t accept that, that’s way too generous!!

Draco: we’ve been through this before, Ev. Just accept the gift. Plus, we’ll count it as an apology gift for not going with you. Sorry again… but would it help if I mentioned that Mother helped design it?

Evera: finnnee, thank you so much, Ferret!! I can’t wait to see it! Also, I don’t care; you’re gonna visit!! That’s final!

Evera frowned but couldn’t help the smile that broke through. Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy absolutely adored Evera since Draco had first introduced her to them. Narcissa treated her like the daughter she never had, showering her with extravagant gowns, robes, jewelry, and hairpieces. As much as Evera resisted accepting, she had also grown accustomed to not being able to stop Narcissa when it came to returning gifts. Narcissa was stubborn and unyielding, having mentioned in the past, “Evera darling, if you can’t accept it, I’ll just buy more. It brings me great joy spoiling you and Draco!” She would deliver this with a sickly sweet smile, as if daring Evera to return them. Evera had always seen Narcissa as a mother figure in her life after Renée basically disowned her for choosing magic and favored Bella ever since. Though Renée did keep Evera’s secret from Bella, that was the only decent thing she’d ever done for her daughter.

Evera: besides all of that, my defenses are high, Draco. I encountered a local oddity today. Unusually beautiful. Golden eyes. And possessing a frightening lack of impulse control at least, that’s what it seems…

Draco: Merlin, Evera. You couldn't just find a nice local friends who collect… what are they called? Pokéman cards? Stay away from it. And be careful for Merlin’s sake! You’ve always been drawn to danger, smh. Do you have your portkey?

Evera: lmao, it’s called Pokémon, sir, and I’ll try to stay out of trouble, but you know me. And yes, ‘Dad,’ I have my portkey, but you realize we can use Apparition now, right? Also we need to work on your muggle knowledge Lol

Draco: you better, Ev! And yeah, I might’ve forgotten… I gotta get going. Talk to you soon, slytherin princess.

Evera: first off, you know I hated when people called me that at Hogwarts!! lol anyways, talk to you soon, slytherin prince.

“Homework already?” Charlie asked, glancing over as Evera tucked the phone away.

“Something like that, Dad,” she murmured, watching the dark trees blur past the window. She knew her first step had to be an investigation. She couldn't risk revealing the world of magic, especially not here.

Later that evening, in the small, damp room that was always hers, located across the hall from Bella’s room, she contemplated the day’s events. She had a problem and potentially a looming magical threat from the remnants of the Wizarding War. Evera Swan was back in the darkness, and she was prepared to fight if she had too.
