Chapter 1
I was having a nice, relaxed time on the patio at Borders after shopping at a few stores when my phone buzzed. It was an instant message from you, asking how my four-day weekend was starting now that I was alone. I typed back that it was great—I had just ordered lunch and was sitting outside enjoying the day. How about yours? You said you were traveling and just checking in. Traveling, eh… business again or pleasure this time? You replied, “I’m all about pleasure.” I laughed and typed, “Uh huh lol brb,” because I had forgotten something in my car.
I went to get it, and walking back without paying much attention, I tripped a little and dropped my purse. I had literally run right into someone. I looked up to apologize and saw this handsome man standing over me, wearing a blue and white striped shirt and white linen pants, smiling down with eyes that glimmered. I lowered my sunglasses and realized it was you. I was completely shocked. I grabbed my purse, quickly checked that my skirt wasn’t riding up, and asked what the hell you were doing here in Maine—of all places—much less at Borders. I giggled and smiled despite myself. You said you wanted to surprise me. Well, you definitely accomplished that!
I gave you a hug, and it lingered longer than it probably should have. You smelled amazing and felt even better. Your hands rubbed up and down my back, sending immediate goosebumps all over my arms. I nuzzled into your neck and kissed your cheek lightly. You turned your face and kissed my lips softly. I was taken aback—it had been sixteen years since we had kissed like that. We had seen each other two years earlier, but it was just casual, hanging out as friends, staying in touch with emails, phone calls, and instant messages ever since.
I kissed you back anyway, and butterflies exploded in my stomach the moment your tongue touched mine. We stood there kissing for what felt like forever, though it was really only a few minutes. The waiter came over and told me my lunch was ready. I glanced at him and said thank you. I asked if you were hungry. You said no, you had just eaten something on the drive up. I asked the waiter to box it up to go. He took the food inside, and I turned back to you, smiling. I really looked at you—you looked great. You caught me staring and said, “What?” with that quirky little smile. I said, “Nothingggg…” and smiled back. I asked what your plans were in Maine and what was going on. You said you had a long weekend with no real plans except seeing your sister and spending quality time with a special someone. Then you gave me that same quirky smile again. Interesting, I thought.
You asked about my plans. I said I hadn’t made any yet. You said, “Perfect.” The waiter came back with my boxed lunch; I paid him. He smiled at both of us and said, “Have a great weekend,” then walked away smirking. You asked what I was doing right now. I said absolutely nothing—I had just been shopping a bit. How about you? You said, “Let’s take a drive. You haven’t seen this place in a while.” Alright. Your car or mine? You said yours was still cold from the trip; we would take mine. I laughed.
You walked me to my car and opened the passenger door like a true gentleman. I teased, “What a gentleman you turned out to be.” You leaned in and kissed me lightly. I kissed you back, and it quickly turned into a deep, passionate kiss. Feeling your body so close to mine again was incredible. I batted my eyelashes at you, and you said, “Get in.” We got in the car, and you leaned over for one more quick kiss. I asked, “Just where are you taking me?” You laughed and said to trust you.
