A Note from the Author

While Gravity of Silence is a work of fiction, the heartbeat beneath these pages is real.This story is built from the bones of my own life. The character of Malachi is based on my husband, and the journey of Gideon—born into a world of shadow on his father’s sixteenth birthday—is the story of my own eldest son. I was fifteen when I became a mother, stepping into a reality that was often as beautiful as it was breaking. We are still together after all these years, but our path has not always been a happy one. We have navigated the heavy silence of low-contact relationships with parents lost to addiction, and we have felt the devastating void left by those who didn't make it out. CJ is a tribute to my husband’s cousin and my dear friend, who we lost to a heroin overdose at twenty-three. Maya, too, carries the weight of a sister who couldn't escape the cycle in time. Many of the moments you have read are dramatized reflections of the very real storms we have weathered. I chose to share these fragments of our truth because I know how isolating the darkness can feel.
