“I didn’t need your help. I told you, I can handle myself. I already took care of one of them.” I vaguely recall spraying the one in the face with my pepper spray that still rustles around in my pocket. It gives me pride to know that I did manage to hurt at least one of them.

The next moment happens in the blink of an eye. He has his hand wrapped around my neck and my body pressed back against the dimly lit wall next to us. If there were people around, they would probably call the police. But there isn’t anyone to witness what he does to me. That should ignite me with fear, but in fact it does the exact opposite. Is that worse?

Once again those strange sparks shoot through my body and I instantly relax into his grasp, as if I belong this close to him.

“Can you handle yourself now Elara?” His voice is low and deep, his lips close to my ear.

Summary

Elara was eighteen when a stranger with burning red eyes tore her attacker away and vanished into the night. For six years, those eyes haunted her dreams as an echo she could never name and a wound she could never heal. She tried to move on, to pretend the world was ordinary, but the memory clung to her like a shadow. When a threat resurfaces, he returns. Only this time, her savior is no ghost, he is a being from a hidden realm ruled by monsters, magic, and ancient laws she was never meant to know. He drags her into his world with promises of protection and truths wrapped in lies, refusing to let her go, refusing to let her question the bond he claims ties them together. All Elara wants is to survive long enough to find her way home. But the longer she stays, the more she fears that fate, and her heart, are pulling her toward a destiny she never asked for, and a man she should never want. As truths become unraveled with every secret cutting deeper than the last, Elara must decide whether to embrace the bond between them… or let it break her instead.
