In a cozy hut by the Yellow River, Lila’s quick hands twisted silk threads with Grandfather. Sunlight danced through bamboo walls, warming their lantern frames. The silk shimmered like river waves, soft and strong. Lila’s bright eyes sparkled as she tied knots tight. Outside, villagers painted paper dragons with bold red strokes and steamed sweet rice cakes that filled the air with honeyed warmth. Laughter bubbled like the river, all ready for Moon Festival joys.

Grandfather hummed an old tune, his frail fingers guiding hers. Dark clouds gathered high, brewing a fierce storm. ‘See there, little one,’ he whispered, pointing to the forest edge. ‘Glowing moss hides in bamboo shadows. It makes lanterns shine without fire’s flicker.’ Lila leaned close, heart thumping with wonder.

Lila’s fingers paused as thunder grumbled like a waking dragon. “Will the storm steal our festival?” she asked, voice small.

Grandfather’s eyes twinkled despite the chill wind sneaking through cracks. “Storms pass, child. Moss from the deep forest glows steady, lighting lanterns with its own magic—no flames needed.” He traced a map on his palm, showing twisting paths to bamboo caves.

That night, rain hammered the roof like angry fists. Floodwaters roared, gulping supplies and paper dragons into the dark river. Grandfather shivered under quilts, his coughs sharp as bamboo splinters. Lila hugged her knees, worry knotting her heart tight.

Lila pressed a cool cloth to Grandfather’s forehead, her small hands steady despite the fear twisting inside. Rain lashed the hut, and the river’s roar grew louder, like a beast hungry for more. “Rest now,” she whispered, tucking the quilts tighter. His coughs rattled like dry leaves, weak and endless.

Through the rattling door, she glimpsed villagers wading in the dark, calling for lost nets and cakes. Mud swallowed their steps. Lila’s bright eyes darted to the forest edge, where bamboo swayed wild in the gale. Grandfather’s words echoed: glowing moss, steady light. Her heart pounded—could she find it?
