"I’ll be honest: this wasn’t what I expected when I started reading. The early chapters are quiet, heavy, and emotionally bleak in a way that caught me a little off guard. This isn’t a light or escapist romance, and it doesn’t soften the weight of Katherine’s past or her isolation. There’s a stillness to the story that can feel somber at first, almost claustrophobic in places. But once I adjusted to the tone, something really clicked. Katherine and Xan are fully realized, deeply human characters. Not archetypes, not wish-fulfillment, people. Katherine, especially, is written with an incredible amount of care. Her inner world feels thoughtful, fragile, and authentic, and watching her slowly recognize her own emotions and needs is genuinely moving. Xan is flawed and frustrating at times, but in ways that feel honest rather than lazy. Around the middle of these early chapters, the emotional groundwork really starts to pay off. The story becomes less about the darkness itself and more about what it means to grow inside it, how connection forms slowly, imperfectly, and sometimes painfully. This is a character-driven, emotionally patient story. If you’re looking for fast pacing or easy romance, this may not be that. But if you enjoy deep interiority, domestic intimacy, and watching two people feel their way toward something healthier, there’s a lot here to appreciate. I’ve bookmarked this and plan to continue. It’s not a fast read, but it is a thoughtful and carefully written one. Readers who appreciate quiet intensity, emotional realism, and slow-burn character development will likely connect with this deeply."
