The Beggar

- Jenna's POV -

Sigh. Life is so exhausting, but I keep fighting anyway.

Hello! Before I begin, let me introduce myself first. My name is Jenna Madrigal. I take every legal job I can find just to earn money. I’m poor, so I have to be practical. I’ve been living alone in a small apartment for four years now.

My mother has already passed away. As for my father… to me, he’s already dead. I’m an only child, so I work very hard just to support my studies and my daily needs.

I’m still a student, but I’m now graduating from college... using only what I earned through my own effort. Even though I get bullied because of my situation, I don’t care. I’m not hurting anyone and I'm innocent.

I just finished my shift at the cafeteria, so I decided to go home. When I stepped outside, it was already dark.

I started walking and passed by Auntie Martha’s bakery. Perfect timing, I was already hungry! I left the bakery, bringing a bag of bread I bought to eat later at home.

As I continued walking down the street, I suddenly noticed a man wearing dirty, old clothes. He was holding a can... asking for spare coins. A Beggar.

Wait—what happened to the world? Why is this beggar so handsome???

Hmm… should I take him home?

Oh shi—Jenna! What are you thinking!? He’s a beggar!

Sigh. I really am a hopeless romantic. I’m already 20 years old and I still don’t have a boyfriend!

I can’t deny it, I’m busy. I don’t have time to flirt, and honestly, there’s no one worth flirting with either. My mornings are for school, and my nights are for side jobs. How am I supposed to find my ideal man?Well… it’s fine. As long as I graduate.

Wait! I forgot—haha, I was spacing out again. It’s already night. This guy must be hungry. But why doesn’t he just work? He’s tall and well-built!

I don’t even understand why I gave him the bread I bought from Auntie Martha earlier. Maybe because, it was out of pity… definitely not because he’s handsome. Right?

He needs it more than I do. I can cook something at home anyway.

“Here, eat this tonight. I’m sorry, this is all I can give,” I said with a smile as I handed him the bag. I noticed he wasn’t looking at my face, but at my right hand holding the bread. Then he slowly lifted his head and—

When he looked at me… Oh-eM-Gee! I almost fainted. He was even more handsome up close! And when he smiled... damn it, someone stop me! I’m taking him home right now!

Jenna! Control yourself! Calm down! Control your hormones!

My gosh, he’s so handsome. Like a Greek god! He could be a supermodel! Why is he here? Maybe no one wants to accept him because he’s a beggar..?

“Thank you.”

Woah, my brain seemed to freeze! His voice... oh my goodness! It’s so attractive!

Jenna! Stop it! You’re falling for a beggar now, aren't you!?

I bit my lower lip as he took the bag of bread from me. Such a waste… If a manager saw him, he’d be famous for sure. Sigh. The world is really strange. Even beggars are handsome now.

Before I completely lost my mind, and before I actually take him home with me, I turned around and quickly walked away.

Home! Grrrr.

Ugh! I’m so hungry. I grabbed two packs of instant noodles from the cabinet and started cooking.

I took a quick shower and changed into my favorite black T-shirt. Perfect timing—the noodles weren’t too hot anymore. Hmm… just as I was about to take my first bite, someone suddenly knocked on the door.

Aish! Seriously!? Who knocks at midnight!?Wait—OMG. Someone is knocking on my door… at midnight!?

The knocking suddenly became louder. Maybe it’s an emergency… but I don’t have friends who would come at this hour. The knocking grew faster, and so did my heartbeat.

Sigh. Whatever. What’s the use of my Taekwondo and Karate training if I won’t use it?

I slowly opened the door, irritation clear on my face. After all, my meal was interrupted. But then—

“Oh my gosh!!”

I was shocked by what I saw. It felt like my world stopped.
