Chapter 1; Where It All Began

Where It All Began

I was born in Mexico on June 11, 2009. From a very young age, my life was marked by constant changes and the absence of the stability every child needs. At first, I was with my mom and my dad, but when I was barely three years old, my father was sent to prison. From that moment on, my world changed forever.

My mom struggled with problems that kept her distant from us. Many times, she left us in the care of other people, and my sister and I moved from place to place without knowing where we would end up. There were moments when we lacked the basics food, attention, and protection.

Eventually, people outside our family realized that something was wrong and contacted my father’s relatives. That’s how my sister and I ended up under the care of family members who promised to take care of us. For a while, I experienced what it felt like to feel safe, to have food and a roof over my head, but that calm did not last.

As the years passed, I learned to smile even though I was broken inside. I learned to stay silent out of fear, to obey in order to survive, and to grow up too fast. No one saw my tears, because from a young age I understood that crying would not save me.

Even so, something inside me never completely broke: my faith. Even in the middle of pain, God was always with me, protecting me when no one else did.
