Chapter 1
Chapter I: The Sound of Breaking Strings
The distillery no longer smelled of grain and industry; it smelled of copper and the ozone of failing reality. Stray lunged through the heavy iron doors, his chest heaving. His hoodie was a shredded ruin, soaked in blood that wasn't his own. Behind him, the doors groaned and buckled as The Fallen slammed his charred scythe against the metal. "Silas! Bella! Sofia! Stand back!" Stray screamed, his voice cracking but firm with a desperate authority.
In the center of the room, bathed in a flickering, sickly green light, he found them. Sofia was slumped against a cold steel vat, her pinstripe suit stained a deep, wet crimson. She gripped her silver flask with white knuckles, her eyes glazed as she stared at a horror only she could see. "Sofia... no..." Stray stumbled toward her, his legs turning to water.
"Run, kid," she whispered, a bubble of blood popping on her pale lips. "The Don... he’s waiting for me. Don’t... don't let him take your name." Before Stray could reach her, a shadow detached itself from the rafters. The Flaw descended like a broken puppet on invisible strings. With a horrific, jerky motion, he swung a jagged length of rebar. There was no scream. Only the sickening, wet thud of metal meeting bone. Sofia’s head rolled back, and her flask clattered to the floor, spilling its last drops into the dirt. "SOFIA!" Stray’s shriek tore through the air.
He felt a translucent hand on his shoulder. It was Silas. The scholar’s resonance harness was sparking violently, his skin pale and fading. "Stray, look at me. You have to go. The Architect... he’s rewriting the script. We aren't his entertainment anymore. We're fuel."
"I'm not leaving you!" Stray reached for Silas’s arm, but his hand passed through the man like smoke. Silas was vibrating, his very frequency destabilizing into nothingness. Across the room, Bella was pinned to the wall by a forest of crystalline shards. The Fragment stood over her, his black void-mask inches from her face. Bella looked at Stray, her eyes wide with a terrifying, lucid clarity.
"Stray... I can't feel my legs," she sobbed, her voice a fragile thread. "The blue light... it's turning yellow. It hurts. It hurts so much!" The Fragment didn't kill her. He began to harvest. He pulled the kinetic energy directly from her marrow, her body jerking in an agonizing, rhythmic pulse. Each spark stolen from her chest made Stray’s own rig hum in a painful, sympathetic vibration. "Let her go!" Stray charged, but he was a world away. The Architect’s voice—a sound like a billion dead cicadas—echoed from the ceiling.
“THE REPLACEMENT IS READY. STRIP THE ANCHORS.”
Silas vanished into a scream of pure, white light. His resonance harness exploded, taking the room's oxygen with it. The heavy doors finally gave way, and The Fallen stepped through, his scythe sweeping through the air to sever the shards holding Bella. She fell, but not to the floor—she vanished into a jagged hole in reality that opened beneath her like a hungry mouth. Stray was alone.
He fell to his knees, the blood of his friends pooling around his shoes. The three Killers didn't attack. They stood in a silent, predatory semi-circle, watching him break. Stray looked at his hands. They shook for a moment, then went deathly still. A cold, oily sensation crawled up his spine. The trauma wasn't a weight anymore; it was a physical substance. The grief for Sofia’s lost empire, the agony of Bella’s stolen light, and the hollow silence of Silas’s broken heart fused within him.
Stray stood up. His hoodie bled into an abyssal black. His shoes ignited with a violent, jagged red light. Beneath his clothes, his fur glowed with a pure, dangerous intensity. He was no longer a survivor. He was a raw nerve ending stripped of its skin—the trauma of the Hour of Relic made flesh. He looked at the ceiling, his eyes glowing with a terrifying, hollow light. He was going to make the Architect feel every bit of this.
The distillery went silent, save for the low, jagged hum radiating from Stray’s body. The trio of Killers didn't move, waiting for Stray to collapse. Instead, Stray’s gaze fell upon Sofia’s flask. He didn’t pick it up. He didn't have time for memorials.
"My turn to set the pace," Stray said. His voice carried the resonance of Silas and the sharp edge of Bella’s grit. He vanished. There was no dash, no sprint. He simply ceased to be where he stood. A streak of red static tore through the air, and before The Flaw could raise his rebar, Stray was inside his guard. With the precision of a scalpel, Stray gripped the rebar and twisted. The metal buckled under a strength fueled by pure grief. With a sickening crunch, Stray ripped the weapon away and drove it through the Killer’s shoulder, pinning him to the wall.
Stray stared into the Flaw’s face, his hollow white eyes inches away. "I have everyone’s weight on my shoulders." A hail of crystalline needles hissed from the catwalks. The Fragment was firing in a blind rage. Stray didn't even look up. He tilted his head a fraction of an inch—a movement borrowed from Sofia’s 'Drunken Flow'—and the needles shattered harmlessly against the floorboards.
Stray kicked off the wall, igniting the air as he ran up a vertical pillar, ignoring gravity. The Fragment tried to shatter into shards to escape, but Stray was faster. He reached into the glitching swarm and grabbed the 'core'—the black heart of the Killer. "Bella told me how your frequency works," Stray gritted his teeth, his fingers glowing with blue-black kinetic fire. "She said it was easy to break if you know where to squeeze."
He slammed the Fragment into the metal grating. The impact sent a shockwave through the building. The Fragment didn't reform; he stayed glitched, his body stuttering in a loop of agony as Stray drained the energy he had stolen from Bella. Below, The Fallen raised his scythe for a world-ending sweep. Stray dove from the catwalk, a falling star of red static. He landed and raced toward The Fallen, swinging his bat with full force.
The Fallen raised his scythe to block, the impact vibrating through the floor. The Fallen smirked. "How strong. Is the guilt getting to you?"
Stray didn’t speak. He swung again, a blow that knocked The Fallen back. The Fallen laughed, raising his scythe with one hand. "Now this will be a fun fight. Bring it on!" He charged, but Stray maneuvered with supernatural fluidity, avoiding the blade and driving his bat straight into the Fallen’s stomach. The Fallen coughed, falling to his knees. "Lucky shot!" he roared, swinging wildly. Stray dashed in, his boot connecting with the Fallen’s head, slamming him to the floor.
"I’m tired of your games. You will pay for what you have done."
Before The Fallen could move, Stray began to swing. He didn't stop until the Fallen’s head was a ruin, blood splattering the floor in a fresh, crimson coat. The Fallen’s body went limp. On the catwalks, the Fragment managed to reform just enough to grab the pinned Flaw. They retreated into the shadows, fleeing the monster they had created.
Stray stood alone in the red-stained room. His eyes darted, his chest heaving as the adrenaline began to sour. The red glow of his fur flickered and dimmed. He looked at his hands, slick with the blood of a god, and felt the full weight of the silence.
His knees buckled, and Stray fell to the floor in the center of the ruin.
