Jugurtha’s Journey Begins
Jugurtha’s duty as a tribune was to serve Rome in any capacity that was required. And so it was with a heavy heart that, on the morning of the Ides of April, he prepared to depart the city, following a call for arms issued by the Senate. Decades of civil strife had plagued Rome, and a massive army was needed to finally bring an end to the conflict.
Jugurtha mounted his sturdy steed and set out, surrounded by a retinue of foot soldiers and centurions. Over the course of the next several months, he traversed the Italian countryside, until he finally reached his destination, a large encampment on the banks of the river Rubicon. He could feel the weight of history bearing down on him as he prepared to cross the river, leading Rome’s armies into battle.
Luck had been with him thus far, but his journey had only just begun. As he surveyed the camp, he wondered what lay ahead. Would the civil war be quelled and the glory of Rome restored? He was determined to find out.
