Chapter 1
Chapter 1 –Arrival
The highway into Fort Halo had always seemed tooquiet, even for a town tucked away in the Tennessee hills. Sean tightened hisgrip on the steering wheel as the sun dipped below the horizon, streaks oforange fading into bruised purple skies. It was the spring of ’84, and thistown felt frozen in time, stubbornly refusing to move forward. A middle schoolloomed in the distance, modest and ordinary—or at least it tried to be.
From the moment he stepped out of the car, Sean feltit: eyes on him, whispers in the air. He had learned long ago to shut them out.The sensation prickled around his body. Most people didn’t feel it—but Sean hadthe Sight. He could tell when something or someone was off, and this town…didn’t feel right.
He parked at the edge of the park, grabbed his bags, and crossed the cracked asphalt. The air smelled faintly of rain—or maybedecayed leaves. He couldn’t tell. Few people were outside, and those he passedseemed… forgetful. They smiled and waved, but their eyes didn’t quite land onhim. It was as if he had always been there.
Inside the school, the fluorescent lights hummed adull welcome. The halls smelled of wood, chalk, and something metallic Seancouldn’t identify. Ahead, the headmaster’s office caught his attention. Mr.Montgomery—the man everyone in Fort Halo seemed to know—was said to be thelatest in a long line of Montgomerys running the school. The family namecarried weight, though records were oddly inconsistent. Sean made a mentalnote: something about that family didn’t add up.
He passed a cluster of students near the lockers. One boy, small and wiry with dark hair and wide eyes, glanced at Sean andfroze. Sean’s stomach tightened. The child’s aura pulsed differently—sharper, brighter.
He was gifted, at least. The boy didn’t look away, even as his friends tugged him along.
Later, in the faculty lounge, Sean poured himself alukewarm cup of coffee. The bitter smell grounded him. Shadows moved in thecorners of the room, faint glimmers of something inhuman. Subtle, almostimperceptible—but Sean could feel it: a presence that had been here long beforehe arrived, patient, waiting.
And it would feed.
By the end of the day, Sean walked the streets ofFort Halo on his way to the small apartment he’d rented on the edge of town. The fading light made the town seem almost alive, as if the shadows themselveswere watching him. A man passed in the opposite direction—a tall figure, hatlow over his face, moving with the deliberate ease of someone who could vanishwithout notice. Sean felt a twinge of recognition, though he had never seen himbefore.
The town was quiet. Too quiet.
From his apartment window, Sean could see thesilhouette of a mansion on a hill outside of town, its shape dark against thetwilight sky. He had read about it in passing—the Montgomery estate, supposedlyabandoned, overgrown. But even from here, something about it seemed alive, breathing, waiting. Sean knew instinctively that this was where the eyes thathad been watching him belonged.
He didn’t yet know the name of the predator who hadhaunted Fort Halo for over three hundred years. He didn’t know that the childhe had noticed at school would be the first target. And he certainly didn’tknow how dangerous the mansion’s nocturnal double could appear.
But Sean could feel it in his bones: Fort Halo wasno ordinary town. And he had just stepped into a trap.
