The sun had just settled over the city of Genova when the family arrived. The city was a blur of noises and smells that clashed against one another, leaving an uneasy agitation in the air. People ran hurriedly with desperate looks in their eyes, many of them coughing and sneezing.
The mother grabbed the stroller from the taxi and ushered the family in the opposite direction, towards the old neighbourhood in the hills. They were greeted with a hollow but welcoming silence, and the mother breathed a sigh of relief.
The father was distracted, his gaze lingering on the busy city below and his mind full of questions. What had caused this spread of illness? What was the government doing to combat it? Half of the population seemed to be ailing and he couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread.
The infant son’s gaze was also on the horizon, taking in the sights that frightened his parents. He wondered what had happened to the city, what lay ahead, and if this was all a bad dream.
The father made his way to the local doctor, determined to find a solution before things got worse.
