ORDINARY DAY
In this universe, there were a total of six races: humans, vampires, dragons, demons, angels, and elves. After the racial wars that lasted between 1450 and 1900, a demon came to power. This demon was intelligent enough to save the country and savage enough to protect it. His name was Michael Hans Vasteria. As a precaution, Michael divided the races into two groups and created three regions. These regions were separated as Hugela, home to humans and angels; Dempir, home to demons and vampires; and Dralf, home to dragons and elves.
Even though humans could not get along with other races, they learned to stay silent thanks to the kind and understanding attitude of the angels. After restoring order and prosperity to the country, Michael introduced democracy, allowing society to choose whoever it wanted every ten years. Different prime ministers were appointed to each region, and everything fell into order.
A hanging toy swinging from the ceiling fell onto my face and woke me up. “Damn it…” I sat up. I rubbed my eyes and grabbed my phone. “I’m late for school…” I quickly grabbed my bag and ran out of the house, heading toward school.
I wish I were a different race. Maybe I’d have a few special powers or something. Being human… meant being inferior among the other races. Still, I got used to it. I got used to being weak. I’ve accepted my powerlessness now. Even if I’ve accepted it, my own race hasn’t. Humans end up in the headlines every week because of some incident, but who cares? Right now, there’s an angel at the top. Her name is Clara Watersonn. She tries to govern the country well and bring prosperity, but because being too kind is in her nature, she doesn’t do a very good job.
The prime minister is an elf, James Vayne. He’s not very useful either; he mostly listens to Clara. I study at a mixed school, located between the three regions. There’s at least one kind from every race in the school, and the administration can’t really handle it.
I pulled myself out of my thoughts, arrived at school, and entered my classroom. My two close friends, Alex and Stella, walked toward me. Alex spoke with a grin.
“Hey! How are you doing, brat?”
Alex was a demon. He was very strong. No one could deny that. Stella, on the other hand, was a dragon. A sweet and kind dragon, unlike the others. Stella giggled and lightly punched Alex’s arm.
“Stop messing with them, Alex!”
Laughing, I threw my book at Alex.
“Idiot!”
Alex and Stella walked over to me and sat at their desks. A scream of pain echoed from the hallway.
“Wonder who’s getting beaten this time?”
The smile on Alex’s face faded.
“It’s probably that guy named Axel beating up a human again.”
I sighed and rested my head on the desk. I looked toward the hallway. A large poster was hanging on the board. It had a picture of Clara Watersonn, and underneath it read:
‘Innovations for mixed schools continue. For prosperity and justice, Clara Watersonn!’
What prosperity and justice? Is someone being beaten or killed at school every day considered prosperity and justice? I laughed to myself
Time passed as it always did until the end of school. A few kids died, a few were injured, and the rest tried to focus on their lessons.
After school, the three of us walked together along the sidewalk. Since our regions were different, we would part ways at the intersection ahead. I kicked a small stone on the ground as I spoke.
“Another week’s over. What are you doing this weekend?”
Alex stretched and grinned.
“What do you think? I’ll be at the gym, obviously. I need to stay strong.”
After a brief silence, Stella spoke with a laugh.
“I have a few things to take care of too…”
I nodded, stopped at the edge of the intersection, and turned toward them.
“Then see you on Monday!”
After saying goodbye to both of them, I followed the road leading to the Hugela region. On one side of the street, people were begging in hunger. On the other, angels were being looked down on by humans. Humans never learn. Even after the war of 1513, when their race was on the verge of extinction, they kept resisting. They never learn.
I pushed all those thoughts aside and kept walking. That’s when a crowd in the distance caught my attention.
