Chapter 1: Stalking the Shadows

Stalking the Shadows

Agent Jessica Davis peered into the darkness as the minutes slipped away. She had been on the case for hours, searching for clues that would answer the questions about the recent homicides. Every second counted when it came to taking down the killer and saving their latest victim.

Jessica got out of the car and slowly approached the whispered shadows of the night. This was the killer’s MO, she thought. Unhinged, preying on vulnerable victims. She remembered the stack of victims’ photos in her office, each one just a child in the throes of a parent’s nightmare.

Agent Nathan Sullivan had been watching the surveillance footage for weeks. He’d seen the pattern of the killer’s attacks and finally tracked him to this part of town. Tonight their criminal adversary was on their turf and it was up to the agents to stop him.

Jessica moved towards the backstreets and Nathan followed a few paces behind. He was the knight and she was the pawn. Yet they both had a part to play in this game and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Out of the corner of her eye, Jessica caught a glimpse of movement. She stopped, her hand moving to her side as she drew her gun. Nathan frowned. This wasn’t followed procedure. Yet all she could think of was the victims, the children whose lives had been taken.

Nathan and Jessica got closer, tensely scanning the area. Then, from the darkness, movement again. Jessica raised her gun, instantly on full alert. “FBI. Now show yourself,” she barked.

The killer stepped out from the shadows. He was a silhouette, his face shrouded in a hoodie. Jessica tensed, ready for anything. But the killer suddenly froze. Nathan had been right; this was it, the moment they’d been waiting for. The silence was cut when Jessica spoke. “Where’s your next victim?”
