Chapter 1: The Recruit
The Recruit
It was a cold and gray morning in 1861. The sounds of marching bands and soldiers echoed through the streets of your hometown. As you gaze out your window, you watch as a dozen men in uniform pass your house, their boots crunching clamorously against the wet cobblestone streets. A feeling of dread takes hold of you; it is time for you to join the fight.
You pack up your few belongings, giving one last hug to your family before heading off to the recruitment office. Your heart feels heavy, but you have made your choice - to fight for the Union.
The recruitment office is crowded and noisy; the walls are plastered with posters and flyers promising glory and adventure on the battlefield. A few older men walked around shaking hands and encouraging the new recruits. You was one of the last to join, scurrying to find a place in line.
You enlist in the cavalry, hoping to find a way to stay away from the danger of the front lines.
