The beginning of the end

They say when the ground was bathed in darkness, the predators were born and devoured the world. Once the darkness fell, I began watching these things. Something about their empty, soulless black eyes, razor sharp, shark like teeth and alabaster skin, unnerved me at first. The more I watched, the more I began to think these things were older than humanity. Their predatory and silent way they hunted seemed almost evolutionary, as if they were designed for the singular purpose of wiping out humanity. Humanity was no longer on the top of the food chain, and was now the main course.

Early news reports called these things, vampires. Some of that characteristics that go with that name made it seem accurate. I had yet to see one of them drink blood. They were more like a devouring plague, that ate tore at their unfortunate victims. Every kill was a bloody mess, that left nothing but an unpleasant sight. It took me a few weeks before I could pass by the piles without puking. Even longer before I could take to scavenging the few things that were left in the piles of bloodied flesh and bones. The smell was the worst part, like rotting meat mixed with ammonia and formaldehyde.

Now I survived by hiding in the small, brief bits of sunlight that poked through the black sky. It was the only thing that seemed to scare these devouring monsters. I had yet to observe why, though. During those brief bursts of sunlight, I moved about in gathering supplies. Weapons, food, even pieces of scrap metal. Anything I could use to survive, in this new dark civilization. Only steel, and daylight seemed to keep me alive. I'm not sure what I feared more, the Devourers or what remained of humanity.

truben21: It took me a while to get into the flow of this story, but once I did, I was hooked. The female lead step from naivety to siren was a little fast for me, but I guess it needed to be, to move the story along. I can't wait for the next story, with the cliff hanger whetting my appetite.
