Ace of Spades: The Broken Street (Book 1)

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

Blackvale doesn't forget its sins. It buries them. Jinx learned early that mercy doesn't exist in the Broken Street. After her family is destroyed by lies whispered in the dark, she survives by refusing to kneel to hunger, to fear, or to the city's rulers. But when she awakens the Heart buried beneath Blackvale, she becomes something far more dangerous than a rebel. Chosen. Bound. Watched. As the city fractures and ancient systems awaken, Jinx is hunted by nobles who fear her, Wardens built to erase her, and a power that believes obedience is destiny. The Heart offers her a throne. Jinx intends to burn it instead. Because some cities deserve to fall. And some monsters refuse to be owned.

Characters

PRIMARY CHARACTERS

Jinx Moon (Ace of Spades)

Role: Protagonist / Anti-hero

Description: A survivor of Blackvale’s Broken Street whose family was destroyed by lies and power. Defiant, strategic, and emotionally guarded. Becomes bound to the city’s ancient Heart after awakening it, forcing her to confront what power truly costs.

Captain Vale

Role: Ally / Moral Counterweight

Description: A city guard captain who begins as a hunter and becomes a witness to Blackvale’s rot. Grounded, principled, and increasingly disillusioned. Acts as Ace’s tether to humanity and conscience as the city descends into chaos.

The Heart of Blackvale

Role: Ancient Antagonistic Force

Description: A sentient, buried system beneath the city—part engine, part god, part correction mechanism. It shapes rulers, monsters, and power structures, seeking obedience and balance over morality.

The Creature

Role: Guardian / Living Relic

Description: A monstrous entity born of Blackvale’s buried sins. Bound to the Heart but increasingly aligned with Ace. Speaks rarely (if at all), communicates through action, defiance, and protection.

SECONDARY CHARACTERS

Kade

Role: Catalyst / Tragic Figure

Description: A young man imprisoned within the Heart’s mechanisms. Used as part of the system’s tests. Represents what the Heart does to those it consumes and reshapes.

Halden

Role: Noble Antagonist

Description: A powerful council member who embodies Blackvale’s corruption. Orchestrates suppression, lies, and “corrections” to maintain control. Flees as the city fractures.

Council of Blackvale

Role: Institutional Antagonists

Description: The ruling body of nobles who benefit from the Heart’s control. Fractures under pressure as Ace destabilizes the system.

ANTAGONISTIC FORCES / ENTITIES

Wardens (Heartbound)

Role: Enforcers / System Corrections

Description: Ancient constructs armored in relic-metal, created to eliminate deviations from the Heart’s design. Appear when Ace breaks the rules too severely.

The Replacement (Unrevealed Entity)

Role: Looming Threat (Book Two Setup)

Description: A successor vessel created by the Heart after Ace’s defiance. Only hinted at in Book One’s ending.

BACKSTORY / MEMORY CHARACTERS

Rowan Moon (Jinx’s Father)

Role: Tragic Catalyst

Description: Executed by the city after false accusations. His death ignites Jinx’s hatred of Blackvale’s systems.

Elara Moon (Jinx’s Mother)

Role: Emotional Anchor (Dead)

Description: Killed in the streets during the city’s betrayal of Jinx’s family.

Cael Moon (Jinx’s Brother)

Role: Emotional Anchor (Dead)

Description: Killed in the streets during the city’s betrayal of Jinx’s family.

Neighbors of the Broken Street

Role: Collective Betrayers

Description: Residents who whisper lies, give false testimony, or look away—symbolizing how ordinary people enable cruelty.

SYMBOLIC / ABSTRACT “CHARACTERS”

(These aren’t people, but they act like characters in the narrative.)

Blackvale

Role: Living Setting

Description: The city itself—responsive, violent, complicit. Often reacts physically to the Heart’s awakening.

The Tether

Role: Binding Force

Description: The connection between Ace and the Heart. Acts almost like a willful presence.

Bloodlines

Ku_Rolet: The novel was good, and I really enjoyed reading it. I love the leads and their bond, but I have one question that confused me. How could Tristan have been dreaming about his mate since he was a child if Omara was already mated to someone else before him? If Kyle had accepted Omara, would Tristan ne...
