Chapter 1

Torchlight threw sharp shadows along the weathered brick walls as Giselle Dubois slipped through the alleyways of Paris, a stranger within her own city. Each whispered footstep was a defiance; each breath drawn into silence brought her closer to betrayal or liberation. The city’s familiar streets seemed alien under curfew, deserted but for echoes of distant executions—grim attestations to revolution turned ravenous.

Giselle’s fingers brushed lightly across the rough, damp walls, following the memorized path toward Saint-Michel. Her pulse quickened, driven not by fear, but by the weight of promises made beneath candles burning low in hidden rooms. Antoine’s words lingered like prophecy: liberty requires sacrifice. Now, shadowed by the distant cry of guards and silent, unseen witnesses behind shuttered windows, she understood the true nature of that promise—grim and unyielding.

Near the meeting place, a door creaked ajar, emitting a sliver of candlelight onto the damp cobblestones. Antoine Bisset stood illuminated, shadows hollowing his sharp features as he beckoned Giselle inside. Once the room sealed itself behind them, he moved swiftly, the soft rustle of papers filling the silence.

“I feared you’d reconsidered,” Antoine murmured, eyeing her carefully. His gaze swept across her face, seeking hesitation—or something weightier, like doubt.

Giselle lifted her chin, her voice firm despite the tremor beneath her ribs. “I made a promise. My sisters depend upon me, and I will not see them fall prey to the Committee’s madness.”

His eyes softened, a rare moment of vulnerability glimpsed beneath his practiced facade. “We risk everything tonight, Giselle. Captain Laurent suspects something, and if caught—” he paused, his voice trailing into grim inevitability, “the consequences are absolute. You must be certain your courage matches your ideals.”
