Chapter 1

The tangled skyline of Neo-Athenia stretched like a fever dream, shaped by glittering spires and flickering holograms, each vying for attention while suppressing the pulse of humanity below. Lucas stood on the balcony of his sterile apartment, its walls infused with biochemical enhancements designed to assuage his anxiety. The air was heavy, denser than curated memories. He took a deep breath, and the faint scent of synthetic vanilla washed over him, a programmed comfort that felt more isolating than reassuring. In this city, emotions had become commodities filtered through relentless algorithms. Love, once chaotic and overwhelming, was reduced to an equation.

He had spent years programming genetic templates that defined affinity, crafting preferences in a world where feelings were no longer authentic but a careful manipulation of dopamine and oxytocin. Each touch, every flutter of attraction was accounted for, adjusted, and gamified. Yet, on the fringes of this technologically perfected existence, rumors swirled about the Lattice—a clandestine group of renegades who relished in the raw, unrefined essence of emotion, seeking to resurrect what had been strangled by the machinery of desire.

The intrigue gnawed at him, consuming him more than the loneliness of countless parties and the hollow laughter of scripted joy that echoed in his mind. One chilly night, soaked in his own trepidation, he found himself following the whispered instructions of a digital flyer to a decaying warehouse pulsating with phosphorescent graffiti, illuminated by the flickers of unfiltered passion. The air thrummed with an undeniable energy, an electricity that promised something far removed from the engineered encounters that had become his life.

Inside, he was met with a swirl of colors and sounds, faces marked by intensity rather than the artificial calm he was accustomed to. Talk of liberation replaced the sterile dialogue of his work; it was intoxicating. He caught the glint of searching eyes among the crowd—Mira, the enigmatic leader of the Lattice. Her presence was magnetic, pulling him into a world that dared to defy the superficial and the fabricated.

“You,” she called out, her voice cutting through the cacophony like a sharp note from a forgotten song. “You wear your doubt like a badge. What are you seeking—data or something real?”

Her challenge hung in the air, a tantalizing bait dipped in uncertainty. Lucas felt a fire flicker within him; the promise of a feeling that didn’t require calculation was a beacon in his monochrome world.
