Chapter 1

The sun barely pierced the dense web of branches above, casting fragmented shapes that danced with the wind’s breath. Gideon paused, adjusting his hat as he regarded the endless stretches of green before him. The air was thick with moisture, a living entity that clung to his skin. Rumors of the Heart of the Abyss had whispered like a ghost through the halls of explorers for decades, a siren’s call that had lured many to vanish without a trace.

Beside him, Isabella, quiet yet ever vigilant, scanned the surroundings with a practiced gaze. Her knowledge of the forest’s secrets made her indispensable; a map woven into muscle and thought. An inscrutable smile played across her lips whenever she caught Gideon staring at the intricate tattoos that snaked up her arms. Each one, she claimed, a story from her ancestors, and in this labyrinth, history and present seemed to merge as one.

The path ahead snaked through the trees, slender vines draping like languid fingers reaching from trunks. As they trod deeper, creatures called from the shade, their songs a mixture of warning and invitation. Gideon felt a shiver of anticipation, fueled by both the thrill of discovery and the looming specter of the unknown. It was a pull stronger than gravity, drawing him toward what could either be triumph or oblivion.

“Do you ever wonder if it’s all true?” Isabella inquired, her voice almost lost amidst the incessant hum of the jungle life. Gideon turned to her, pausing a moment to frame his response, aware that within her question lay more than idle curiosity. The Heart of the Abyss was more than a legend; it was a test of spirit, a mirror reflecting one’s deepest desires and fears.

“Every tale holds a kernel of truth,” he replied, “It’s why we chase them.” But beneath his steely resolve lingered doubt, a specter challenging his belief in the tales passed down through adventurers’ camps for generations. He tightened his grip on his pack, feeling the familiar weight of tools and provisions. Yet, no steel or parchment could prepare them for what lay in the shadows.

They moved forward, forgoing the comfort of certainty for the allure of the unknown. The air grew thicker, carrying the scent of earth and decay. Overhead, a haunting cry echoed, a reminder of the primal toils that governed this untouched realm. With each step, they carved a path not just through the forest, but through their own apprehensions—beginning a journey that would leave them forever altered.

Ku_Rolet: The novel was good, and I really enjoyed reading it. I love the leads and their bond, but I have one question that confused me. How could Tristan have been dreaming about his mate since he was a child if Omara was already mated to someone else before him? If Kyle had accepted Omara, would Tristan ne...
