Chapter 1
As you slowly open your eyes, the chill of the cryopod’s glass still pressed against your cheek, you’re met with an unsettling silence. The stars twinkle like diamonds scattered across the velvet expanse outside the viewport, a reminder of the vastness of space. Your memories are hazy, but one thing’s clear: something’s amiss. The ship’s AI, Mother, is unresponsive, and the only sound is the gentle hum of life support systems. Your mind struggles to recall the events leading up to this moment.
Fragments of memories surface: the excitement of embarking on a journey to a new home, the anticipation of a new beginning, and the uncertainty of the unknown. But the details remain elusive, shrouded in a fog that refuses to lift. You try to sit up, but a wave of dizziness washes over you, forcing you back onto the cryopod’s cushion. The cryopod’s lid slides open, and you gingerly swing your legs over the side, feeling the cold metal beneath your feet.
The cryopod’s interior lights flicker, casting eerie shadows on the walls. Your gaze falls upon the console in front of the cryopod, where a message flashes in red: ‘Mother offline. Systems on backup power.’ The words seem to sear themselves into your brain, leaving more questions than answers.
What happened to Mother? Why is the ship on backup power? The silence is oppressive, punctuated only by the steady hum of the life support systems. You feel a growing sense of unease, a creeping dread that something is terribly wrong. Your eyes adjust to the dim light, and you notice a figure slumped over a console in the distance. It’s Dr. Rachel Kim, the chief scientist. She’s motionless, her body limp. A sense of trepidation grips you as you wonder if she’s... alive.
