Chapter 1: Shadows of the Past

Lena sat in her small apartment, the late afternoon sunlight filtering softly through the blinds, casting gentle stripes across her cluttered workspace. Her sketchpad lay open on the table, but her eyes stared past the blank page, unfocused. The faint hum of city life outside was a distant echo compared to the storm raging inside her mind.

It had been six weeks since the accident, yet the memories refused to fade. Every time she closed her eyes, she was back in that moment—shattered glass, screeching tires, screams. The sound of metal twisting, the shockwave that had knocked her unconscious.

She reached for her tea mug, her hands trembling slightly. She tried to focus on her breathing, inhaling slowly, exhaling just as gently. But the images persisted, creeping into her thoughts like unwelcome shadows.

Her phone buzzed on the counter. She hesitated, then reached out and saw Maya's name flashing on the screen.

"Hey," Lena answered softly, voice barely above a whisper.

"Hey, Lena. Just checking in. You’ve been quiet lately. Are you okay?"

Lena hesitated again. She wanted to say she was fine, that she was managing. But the truth was different.

"I’m... okay," she managed, though her voice betrayed her. "Just tired."

Maya’s voice was gentle but insistent. "Lena, I know you’re going through a lot. If you ever want to talk, I’m here."

Lena nodded silently, feeling a twinge of gratitude. But she knew that talking about it—really opening up—felt like an impossible mountain to climb.

As she gazed at her unfinished drawing, she wondered if she’d ever find a way out of these shadows. Or if they would always be a part of her, lurking just beneath the surface.
