Chapter 1

The night wrapped Barranquilla in a velvet shroud, the humid air thick with the scent of mango blossoms and smoke rising from the distant fires of revolution. In the dimly lit back room of a long-abandoned paladar, nine shadowy figures gathered around a table lavishly adorned with the remnants of previous feasts. Candles flickered as if to mimic the very hopes and fears swirling amongst this assembly of ambition and power. Their faces, illuminated sporadically by the flame’s dance, revealed the creases of men who had devoured much more than mere sustenance; they had feasted on lives, dreams, and power itself.

One by one, they unveiled their plans. Antonio, with his mustache curling like the fangs of a devil, spoke first, his voice a silky whisper as he stirred his simmering pot of coconut rice. “Victory favours the bold,” he declared, tossing in a pinch of salt that sparkled like the jewels nestled in his pocket. The others nodded, yet it was evident that some wore masks of treachery, their thoughts adrift in the stewing pot of alliances still to be formed—bitter, sweet, or simply poisonous.

“Or perhaps it favours the hungry,” retorted Beatriz, her laughter a strange mix of lilting melody and steel, as she poured rum into a simmering pan. The eyes on her flickered, intrigued, for she had always possessed the uncanny ability to transform desire into something tangible. Her dish would be the crown jewel—a seductive fusion of spice and rhythm, designed to extract loyalty from even the most pronounced traitor.

As the aromas melded and tugged at their senses, an unspoken agreement settled among the men, binding them together in the feast of their own making. Each prepared his dish not merely for culinary triumph, but to seduce the others into complicity. With every chop and stir, secrets splintered off like shards of glass, dangerous and electrifying in their potential to cut deep, slashing through layers of loyalty and ambition alike.

The true contest, however, lay beyond the simmering pots. Each course would beckon a morsel of trust, or a dagger within the heart of camaraderie. Diabolical reflections shone in their eyes like the oil glistening atop Beatriz’s creation, a dish brewed from equal parts venom and vigilance. They were men who feasted on the spoils of others, and tonight they risked it all for the chance to dominate the tapestry of Barranquilla’s future.

With the final flourishes of herbs and the swelling sounds of the raucous city outside, an unseen tension began to bubble forth, complicating the modest gathering. Walls were thin, and the walls had ears; perhaps the revolution itself had limbs that extended into the shadows of their evening. As laughter and barbs merged freely over the table, one could not escape the sense that the night, like the dishes unhurriedly being prepared, was not yet finished cooking.
