The Mismatched Suitcase

Roger’s day began like any other, with a complex concoction of misplaced optimism and frantic disarray. Having barely slept the night before, he stumbled through the airport security line with a disheveled look that suggested he had, at some point, had a lover’s quarrel with his comb. His thoughts were preoccupied with a potential new client who was notorious for their uncompromising demands and a fondness for undercooked eggs. Clinging to his last drops of caffeine-fueled sanity, he slouched towards the baggage claim, yawning deeply.

The conveyor belt rumbled to life, spitting out luggage with the enthusiasm of a toddler tossing toys out of a crib. Roger’s eyes scanned for his modest black suitcase, the one with the peeling Band-Aid on the handle, a remnant of a particularly clumsy incident in New York. After wrestling a canary-yellow monstrosity and sidestepping an elderly woman wielding a floral weapon of a suitcase, he finally spotted his beleaguered bag.

Grabbing it, he heaved a sigh of relief—just as a striking woman in a pristine white suit glanced in his direction, raising an eyebrow. Unfazed, Roger dashed towards the exit, inadvertently knocking over a tower of brochures promoting “Inner Peace Through Zen Knitting.” But something felt off. His suitcase was heavier, and it made an odd clinking sound as he rolled it. He ignored it initially, chalking it up to exhaustion-induced paranoia.

As he settled into his Uber, the realization dawned on him. The suitcase had a glossy, red tag reading “Victor S.” in impeccable calligraphy, an undeniably elegant identifier that his battered luggage notably lacked. Panic set in. What kind of person travels with a suitcase that jingles like a festive cowbell? He scanned the backseat, hoping to see the comforting sight of his ragged Band-Aid handle, but it was nowhere to be found.

Before he could alert the driver, his phone buzzed with a message: “Mr. S., looking forward to our little agreement. The package is in the case. M.”

Roger’s stomach did a somersault. Package? Agreement? He wasn’t sure if he had the energy or the mental capacity to unravel what felt like the beginning of an ill-planned spy caper. His mind raced, wondering who Victor S. was and why their luggage was full of mysteries. Deciding he’d unravel the tangled web in the comfort (and privacy) of his apartment, Roger began to chuckle nervously.

The driver cast a concerned glance in the rearview mirror as Roger’s laughter turned into a full-blown guffaw of incredulity. How bad could it be? After all, how much trouble could a mere suitcase cause?
