Lila stood before the garden gate, her heart pounding in her chest like the beat of an unsanctioned drum. The sun hung low in the sky, casting an amber glow that made the hidden enclave shimmer with a surreal promise. Nobody was supposed to feel what she was feeling right now—anticipation, curiosity, a hint of fear. In her world, the mere suspicion of emotion could condemn her to a fate worse than isolation.
