Les Johnson forment une grande et belle famille. Une immense maison. Une mère au foyer aimante, un père dans la finance et des enfants bien élevés, très heureux et avec un avenir tout tracé. Le mari attentionné devient un homme rempli d'amertume. Et les enfants heureux deviennent des adultes en souffrance. Alors que le père de famille décède d'une crise cardiaque des années plus tard, de sombres secrets soigneusement enterrés risquent de revenir à la surface. Mais Katherine Johnson est prête à tout, pour protéger ses enfants des erreurs du passé. Le mensonge ne lui fait plus peur, plus après toutes ces années. C'est la vérité, qui risque d'éclater au grand jour, qui l'effrait plus que tout au monde.
