Between Water and Memory

The dawn looked as if the fairies painted the sky and forgot to add a note in the Country Almond tree that swayed too much, in the corner of the fields. The fish in the streams between the fields jumped up merrily as if to greet the sun itself and the hush of the morning light spread its wings throughout the village.

Seven o'clock wasn't too early for Mira. She was up with her book and her coat and was now making her way up to the bridge like ledge over the little stream.

"Hey fishy... Good morning - ooh you have water snakey too... ", she greeted the animals just as friends do.

Mira sat on the bridge like ledge and let the cold water flow over her feet hanging below in the stream and the little fish came and kissed her feet, making her feel ticklish.

The mild breeze flowed throughout the greenery and the Earthy smell of the mud came alongside with it. There came a ruffling sound of leaves from behind Mira and then,

"Mira", came a voice. A voice that could calm the insides of Mira in a way nothing else could. A voice that went echoing deep inside her heart.

Mira had to gasp for breath - and then,

"Silas", said Mira.

Silas came up to her and sat beside her, his eyes on hers for a moment. He looked at Mira as if he were looking at a star - with dreamy eyes.

He had memorized all her features by then. Tanned skin, wavy black hair just below her shoulders, eyes that looked kind yet betrayed, her body thin but soft in ways one couldn't imagine. Sometimes he found it hard to believe that he actually fell in love and they were just twenty yet.

Silas knew many things about Mira, maybe except one. That was how much Silas really meant to Mira. Mira could never get tired of watching how Silas's black curls bounced on his head, how his thick eyebrows softened when he saw her, how beautiful his perfect teeth looked when he laughed or how exquisite Silas looked in his usual black t-shirt.

Silas was also a tan boy. He was just a little taller than Mira, and was not much muscular. But his boyish eyes could talk real words if only Silas looked a little longer into the eyes of a dreamer.

Silas chuckled. He loved to see her loose her breath in that way.

"Good morning, angel in the fields", teased Silas taking Mira's hand.

"Good morning my boy in black", said Mira with a twinkle in her eyes.

Silas could hear the sound of hundreds of hooves. It was maddening. Yet it was his own heartbeat. It always got him when she called him hers.

"I am yours?", asked Silas trying not to show how proud he was.

"You are mine", said Mira claiming Silas like it was serious business.

Silas put his arms about Mira and kissed her temple.

"My forever girl", he said as he breathed in her scent.

The story of Silas and Mira was quite different from what you call normal. They met for the first time in class as normal people do, that is true.

It was a dark rainy day and Mira's eyes swept over her classmates lazily. That was when she saw Silas in a corner, leaning to the wall slightly, trying to hide behind his phone.

"Found a cute boy", said Mira to Eden, her very best friend.

"Where?", asked Eden fighting Mira to look over where Mira was looking.

"Nope. Mine. I like him", said Mira pushing Eden away.

"Blah blah", said Eden continuing to brush her hair. "Good that I didn't see him too. Remember the last boy you said was cute? He turned out to be a bus conductor"

Mira slapped Eden's arm rolling her eyes.

Silas hadn't even noticed Mira looking at him for a few weeks. Then it became obvious. Mira was looking at Silas with her betrayed eyes. It struck Silas.

Silas was usually a quiet boy, and introvert who hid well within his own gang when his mind was too loud. So Silas, as it happened couldn't figure out why Mira chose him as her crush. Why him among so many popular guys? He was just a boy minding his own business.

Mira knew Silas would probably never talk to her first even if he felt anything. She studied Silas well, more than she ought to. Mira could somehow identify the days Silas felt low without having talked to him even once. It was Mira's superpower. She could read Silas.

Another afternoon when most of the students have left class, Mira went back into get something she had forgotten. That was when she saw it. Blood. On Silas's hand. No one was about in the class. Mira read Silas again.

"Silas, don't panic. It's okay. I won't tell anyone", Mira whispered going closer to Silas.

Silas tried to deny it. He tried to tell her it wasn't him - he tried to get his voice out to convince her that it wasn't a piece of glass in his hand. He tried to convince her that he didn't cut himself. But instead,

"How do you know my name?", was all that escaped Silas.

Mira was with Silas now. She was blotting off his blood and wrapping his hand with her clean handkerchief, not bothering to think whether it was ethical to touch a boy without even knowing him.

"Of course I know your name", said Mira after her tasks were finished. Silas himself was surprised of how he let her do it all. He somehow knew that it was useless to lie to her.

"Hard day okay? Please don't tell anyone", said Silas trying not to make it a big deal.

"Not telling anyone", said Mira looking at Silas's star eyes. " Please don't do this though. There is help. I swear there is. And.......I'm here"

Silas held his breath. He knew she was there. And somehow, he knew exactly what she meant.

"I'm sorry - I don't really - I don't know how to care", said Silas a little brokenly.

It struck Mira straight in her heart.

"You don't have to know it. Just be safe, okay? Text me if it feels heavy", replied Mira in a low tone and wrote down her number on a piece of paper and gave it to Silas.

Silas, as it happened didn't understand why he felt what he felt at that moment. It was hard for him to stop.

"Doesn't mean I don't care", blurted out Silas.

"Oh I know it", said Mira softly, picked up her bag and went away feeling a dozen of emotions at once.

First, she found out her crush hurt himself, then she surprised herself by touching him, helping him, then she hinted she liked him - and he might like her back. Mira felt her heart battling against her chest. She didn't know how she managed to act so calm with her beautiful crush - but somehow she did.

It was the beginning of their story.

"Look Silas, little water snakey", pointed out Mira as she saw a little creature emerge through the stream.

"Oh yeah? Your friend? Well then, introduce me", said Silas with a chaotic grin on his dream-like face.

"Okay. Hey Silas, here's snakey, and hey snakey this is - this is Silas, my boyfriend", said Mira out of breath. It felt oddly comforting to introduce Silas as her boyfriend though.

Silas swallowed air.

"I swear you're going to malfunction me someday", he whispered.

"You're already a bit malfunctioning sir", teased Mira playing with Silas's hand and trying not to look like a tomato exploding with emotions.

Silas kissed Mira's cheek and that was it. Mira couldn't handle Silas any longer. She held his face in her hands and kissed him a dozen times on his eyes, nose, forehead and finally on his lips.

Silas was taken by surprise. He held Mira close as if he was holding something precious, yet so dangerous.

"You're a drug", whispered Silas to Mira's hair. "But yet, I wanna overdose"

Mira now who was over her love attack mode found her voice.

"Yeah? Trust me, you're more dangerous. And I think I'm addicted already"

Both of them laughed softly. Their skies may not be painted with glorious colours, their hearts may not be perfect. But even with cracks, this was real, they both knew it. Mira fell in love with a boy who thought he was hard to love, yet Mira felt otherwise. She told him so one day when he was in pain.

That day had been too harsh on Silas. But Mira didn't insist him to tell her everything. She in her heart believed that Silas will one day pour his heart out and that moment needed strength. So Mira was just helping Silas gather himself, to make him believe in himself.

Silas actually tried to hide his eyes. To tell her it's dust. But there was no use of lying to his girl. She reads him anyway.

"Rest here Silas, you're safe", said Mira guiding his head to her chest. She was shaking a bit and her heart ached in a way she couldn't explain. She didn't understand that feeling, she only knew she couldn't bear to see Silas struggle alone. She held him tight forcing down her own tears. Silas had his arms around Mira's waist and his head hidden in her chest. Mira kissed Silas's forehead and his temple.

"I love you", breathed out Silas finally. Mira knew that that was the only thing she could get out of Silas then.

"I love you too", said Mira. "It's easy to love you"
