Chapter 1

Chapter 1 – The Fall and the Villa

The Italian sun was bleeding gold across the Amalfi Coast, waves crashing against jagged cliffs far below. Emma Harper, an adventurous Australian tourist, had wandered too close to the edge, chasing a thrill she couldn’t name. One wrong step, a sudden slip—and the world went black.

When she opened her eyes, she was somewhere unfamiliar. Warm wood and the faint scent of old leather filled the air, classical music drifting softly from unseen speakers. Light poured through Venetian blinds, painting stripes across the marble floor.

A tall man stood in the corner, impeccably dressed, his dark eyes sharp and unreadable. Something about him made Emma’s chest tighten.

“Where… am I?” Her voice was hoarse, uncertain.

“You’re safe,” he said simply, his accent smooth but commanding. “You need rest.”

Emma frowned. She didn’t trust him. And yet… there was a strange familiarity. A fleeting memory surfaced: a crowded New York street, a chance encounter, a man whose gaze had lingered on her longer than anyone’s ever had. Something dangerous, something tender.

“Who… are you?” she whispered.

He hesitated, a flicker of emotion in his dark eyes. “Lorenzo Vitale,” he said. “And you… you’re Emma Harper.”

The villa was perched on cliffs overlooking the turquoise sea, grand and imposing yet strangely welcoming. Emma moved cautiously, touching the marble countertop as if it could explain her situation. Lorenzo watched silently, his presence magnetic and intimidating all at once.

Her mind was a jigsaw puzzle missing pieces. Memories of Australia—cafés, a brother, ordinary life—faded behind fragments of a past she didn’t fully recognize: arguments with a man, a mission interrupted, a cliff edge… and a sacrifice. She remembered jumping, falling—not for herself, but for him. To save him.

“You’re awake earlier than I expected,” Lorenzo said, voice low and smooth. “Good. I need to know if you remember anything.”

Emma shook her head, panic rising. “I… I don’t… I can’t…”

He stepped closer, but instead of reaching for her, he rested a hand lightly on a chair, respecting her boundaries. Yet the air between them crackled.

“You’ll remember,” he said softly. “Eventually. But for now… just know you’re safe. Here.”

Days passed in a delicate, uneasy rhythm. Meals were brought, the villa’s corridors whispered with quiet footsteps, and the classical music played endlessly. Emma was kept hidden from the world—not a prisoner, but a treasure Lorenzo would move heaven and earth to protect.

One evening, she found herself on the terrace, gazing at the cliffs where her accident had almost ended everything. The sky was ablaze with orange and violet, the sea shimmering below.

“You shouldn’t go out there,” Lorenzo said from the doorway, softer than before, almost intimate. “It’s dangerous.”

“I—I just…” Her pulse quickened. “I remember… bits. A cliff. You… I think I saved you.”

He froze, then slowly allowed a small, almost painful smile to spread across his face. “Yes. That was you. I didn’t know then how much I… needed you. Even if we were enemies.”

Emma’s breath caught. Enemies? That sounded wrong. But fragments of memory—a mission, their meeting in the US, his fascination with her, her daring act of protection—stitched themselves together.

Lorenzo stepped closer, stopping just short, letting his hand hover near hers. “You don’t remember everything yet. But I… I love you, Emma. And I won’t let anything happen to you. Not ever.”

Her heart raced with confusion, fear, and a strange, warming comfort. She didn’t trust herself around him. And yet, some deep, instinctual part whispered that he had always been the reason she was still alive.

And maybe, just maybe, he always would be.

Hester: Very good, was short too the point , not lingering on the abuse, pity you didn’t let him step in earlier knowing the abuse was happening, but this is almost real for some women who have gone through it, just wish they could all have a princess at te end of thete tunnel
