Chapter One

“Another day another book!” I tell myself everyday before going to work as I look in the mirror. I have worked at the City’s National Library for about two years now. Nothing remotely exciting ever happened there. The most excitement I’ve had is library patrons sneaking their pets in hand-carry bags while browsing books on animal care.

Puppies, kittens, hamsters, gerbils - you name it. The most exotic? A ball python and a bearded dragon. Cute as they are, I always have to escort the patrons out with their pets… lovingly, of course, but out nonetheless.

“Try and have a wonderful day Remy,” I remind myself by fixing my silver bob undercut. I make sure the messy strands frame my chubby face stylishly. I love wearing black – it suits me, but my librarian uniform is a light blue polo t-shirt with dark blue pants and a blue lanyard. I look like a cloud if you ask me. A big blue rain cloud floating around the library shelving books and overseeing my staff.

“Here we go. Make yourself proud today,” I breathed as I stepped out of my apartment. I live in a twelve storey building on the sixth floor. I feel like it’s my lucky number. I love the number six. Round and pudgy like me!

Ok, ok I just feel like I need to be optimistic about life and its challenges. Navigating through life is not easy with my family being in another country and here, it’s just me and my tripod senior 18 year old cat, Thomas. “I’m off to work Thomas, don’t do anything I won’t do!”.

I think he has had enough of me and my shenanigans. I just love to mess with the grumpy old man. However, instead of meowing irritably today, he kind of slow-blinked me - the way cats say “I love you”. I smiled at him and gave him a slow blink back. Maybe today will be a better day.
