Chapter 1 The Next Generation’s First Shift and Mating Ball
The night air thrummed with electricity.
The entire Bloodmoon Pack had gathered at the sacred clearing, where bonfires roared high into the sky and the old stones circled the ritual grounds like ancient sentinels. Every wolf knew what tonight meant—an ending and a beginning. The final war against the Ancient Lycan had been won nearly two decades ago, but tonight… tonight was about the next generation stepping into their birth right.
At the centre of it all stood Caelan and Selene, the twin heirs of King Zack and Queen Lilly, their forms bathed in firelight and silver moon glow. Both stood barefoot on the earth, the anticipation in the crowd rippling like a storm about to break.
The night they had waited eighteen years for was here.
Their first shift.
Caelan’s POV
The smell of burning pine filled my lungs, and every muscle in my body tensed as I stood in the centre of the stone circle. My heart thundered like a war drum, echoing louder than the chanting around me. This was it—my birth right, my future, my first step into becoming Alpha.
The moon above glowed so bright it painted the entire clearing in silver, and I swore I felt it watching me.
I dropped to my knees. Pain lanced through my bones, white-hot and searing, and then—ecstasy. Every muscle snapped, stretched, tore, and reformed. My vision blurred, the chanting fading into the sound of blood rushing in my ears.
Then I wasn’t just me anymore.
I was Jax.
Black fur rippled over my body, sleek and strong, every muscle thrumming with raw power. Four white paws dug into the earth like claws of polished stone, and when I blinked, the world was alive in forest green. Every scent, every movement, every heartbeat—I felt it all.
I howled, a sound ripped from my chest, primal and furious, and the Pack howled back.
This was freedom. This was power. This was destiny.
Selene’s POV
The moment Caelan shifted, my chest burned with pride. But then it hit me—my turn.
The pain came fast, sharp like fire cutting through bone. I gasped and doubled over, my body breaking and remaking itself in the span of heartbeats. My skin split into shimmering fur, and when I looked up, I no longer saw the world with human eyes.
I saw it as Storm.
Pure silver fur shimmered like moonlight, my paws dipped in white, and my eyes burned gold like the sun breaking through clouds. My howl rose to meet my brother’s, our voices weaving together until the entire Pack’s song shook the stars.
We were heirs. We were warriors. We were wolves.
Skyler’s POV
Standing just behind the circle, my chest ached as I watched my best friend—my brother in all but blood—shift for the first time. Caelan had always been larger than life, always destined to lead, but seeing him now as Jax… gods, he was breath-taking.
And then Selene.
I’d known her all my life, been her protector, her sparring partner, her confidant. But when she shifted, something inside me snapped. My wolf—Deiseal—howled inside, clawing at me, desperate to get closer.
My knees almost buckled.
The mate bond slammed into me like a tidal wave. Selene. My best friend’s twin. The girl I’d sworn to protect my whole life.
She was mine.
Kayla’s POV
I’d been on edge all night, my heart hammering as I stood with the other healers near the back of the circle. I’d always known tonight would be big—it wasn’t every day the heirs shifted—but something else buzzed in my blood.
And then I saw him.
Caelan.
My best friend. My Alpha.
The second his wolf form met my eyes, the bond snapped taut between us, sizzling like a live wire. My wolf—Nessa, cream-colored with hazel eyes—roared awake inside me. My knees went weak, and for the first time in my life, I almost forgot how to breathe.
He was mine.
The Mating Ball
The Pack celebrated the shifts with a howl that shook the trees. Then came the second half of the night: the Mating Ball, a tradition as old as the Pack itself.
The great hall had been transformed, draped with silks of crimson and silver, massive torches burning against the walls. Musicians beat drums in the corner while wolves in human form mingled, laughed, and danced.
But beneath it all ran something wild. Instinct. Desire. The bonds snapping into place.
I could feel it from every corner—wolves finding their fated mates in stolen glances, in touches that burned, in scents that tangled in the air like fire and rain.
Caelan’s POV
I found Kayla near the back of the hall, her eyes wide, her body tense like she’d been waiting for me. The mate bond tugged me to her, magnetic and inescapable.
She smelled like herbs and sunlight, like home.
When our eyes locked, it was over.
The fire roared to life inside me, and I crossed the distance in three strides. My hand slid to her cheek, and she trembled—but not in fear. Her lips parted just as mine crashed down, claiming, sealing, consuming.
My wolf howled in triumph.
Kayla was mine.
Selene’s POV
The instant I walked into the hall; my eyes found Skyler’s.
It was like the world stopped moving. His wolf slammed into mine, bond snapping so hard I gasped aloud. My chest squeezed, and my throat burned, but gods—it felt right.
Skyler. My best friend. My protector. My mate.
I stepped toward him, trembling but smiling, and when his arms wrapped around me, everything fell into place.
“I’ve got you,” he whispered against my hair. “Always.”
And I knew he meant it.
The Challenge
(Kayla’s POV)
I should have known peace never lasted long.
The hall was still buzzing when the challenger stepped forward. A tall she-wolf with sharp green eyes and a cruel smirk. Jealousy burned off her like smoke.
“I challenge you,” she spat, pointing at me. “For your place. For your right to stand at the Alpha’s side.”
The room went dead silent.
Caelan stiffened beside me, his eyes flashing forest green, but I stepped forward before he could speak. The fire in my chest was already roaring.
“You want to take what’s mine?” I hissed.
Her wolf surged, but mine was faster. My body snapped, fur tearing free, Nessa howling as claws sank into flesh. In seconds, the hall was nothing but chaos and blood.
And then it was over.
Her head rolled across the floor, still dripping crimson. I shifted back, naked, blood streaked, and furious. I grabbed the head, walked calmly to Caelan, and dropped it onto a silver platter on the table before him.
Then I turned to the room.
“While I may be your Pack Doctor,” I snarled, my voice carrying over the silence, “you will not touch what is mine. You challenge me for my mate, you end up like this bitch. You challenge me for my title, you end up like this bitch. Do I make myself crystal clear?”
The hall erupted in cheers and howls.
Caelan’s POV
Shock. Fury. Pride. Gods, I felt everything all at once.
Kayla stood before me, blood-streaked and radiant, her chest heaving, her wolf howling inside her eyes. My bond sang with pride, with lust, with absolute certainty.
She was mine.
But she was more than that.
She was powerful. Untouchable. A warrior as much as a healer.
I wrapped my arm around her, pulled her close, and raised my voice.
“Your future Luna!”
The Pack howled, the sound shaking the rafters.
Skyler’s POV
I’d thought nothing could shock me tonight—not after finding Selene, not after the bond nearly knocked me out. But Kayla’s challenge… gods.
She didn’t just win. She dominated.
And when she dropped that head at Caelan’s feet, I saw the truth plain as day.
This generation—my generation—wasn’t just inheriting the Pack.
We were about to take it to heights no one had ever dreamed of.
Selene’s POV
As the cheers shook the hall, I looked around at my brother, at Kayla, at Skyler, and my heart swelled so wide I thought it might burst.
This was the new future of the Bloodmoon Pack.
We were strong. We were ruthless. We were bound by love and blood and destiny.
And nothing would ever tear us apart.
Not after everything we had survived.
Not after everything we had become.
