Here’s a story about a fire skeleton boy.

Everyone in the ash-town was afraid of the boy who burned.

They said if you saw him at night, you’d see a walking skeleton wrapped in gentle flames, his ribs glowing like a furnace and his skull lit from within. They said he left footprints of warm embers and that the fire never went out.

But none of that was the scary part.

The scary part was that he cried.

The fire skeleton boy didn’t remember his real name. The flames had taken that, along with his skin, his heartbeat, and his place among humans. All he remembered was warmth—once, long ago, warmth meant home. Now it meant hunger.

He lived at the edge of the burned forest, where trees were frozen mid-collapse, black and glassy. At night, he sat on a rock and fed the fire inside his bones, because if it went out, so would he.

Sometimes sparks drifted from his ribs like fireflies. He liked to watch them float away. It felt like letting pieces of himself escape.

One evening, a child from the town followed him.

The boy noticed right away. Fire sees everything.

“Go home,” the skeleton boy said, his voice crackling like a campfire trying not to die.

The child didn’t run.

“You’re not a monster,” the child said. “Monsters don’t shiver.”

The fire skeleton boy looked down at himself. His flames flickered low. He was cold. No one had ever said that out loud before.

“I burn things,” he whispered.

“So does the sun,” the child said. “But it also keeps us alive.”

The skeleton boy didn’t know how to answer that.

The child reached into their pocket and pulled out something small: a coal wrapped in cloth. “My mom says fire likes to be shared.”

Carefully, the skeleton boy took it. When the coal touched his palm, his flames surged—not wild, not painful, just… steady. Stronger.

For the first time, the fire didn’t feel like it was eating him from the inside.

The skeleton boy knelt so they were eye to eye. His skull glowed softly now, like a hearth instead of a blaze.

“What’s your name?” he asked.

The child told him.

“And yours?” the child asked back.

The fire skeleton boy thought for a long moment. Names were important. Names were anchors.

“…Ember,” he said.

The child smiled.

From that night on, the forest didn’t feel so empty. Ember learned how to keep his fire warm instead of hungry. He learned that flames could light paths, not just burn them.

And when winter came, the ash-town no longer feared the glow at the forest’s edge.
