Chapter 1: Restraint
She became aware of herself slowly, long before she fully opened her eyes. First came the feeling that something was wrong, subtle at first, little more than a tremor somewhere beneath consciousness, followed almost immediately by memory rushing back in fragments too vivid to ignore. The kiss beside the car. His hands on her body. That impossible current moving between them, terrifying and intoxicating at the same time, like a river of living energy flowing beneath her skin and straight through her veins. She had never experienced anything remotely like it. Even now, with sleep still clouding her thoughts, the memory alone was enough to send warmth spreading through her chest. And after that… nothing. Darkness.
Where am I?
The question struck her all at once and her eyes flew open.
Morning sunlight flooded the unfamiliar room in long golden streaks, soft autumn light spilling across dark sheets and pale walls while somewhere beyond the windows wind moved gently through trees alive with birdsong. Everything felt unnaturally peaceful, suspended in that fragile quiet that exists only in the earliest hours of the morning, and for several seconds Amelia simply lay there staring upward, disoriented by how beautiful it all felt.
Under normal circumstances she would have panicked immediately.
She should have been terrified. She should have ripped herself away from whoever was beside her and stumbled out of bed with her heart trying to claw its way out of her chest. That was how her body usually reacted to closeness. To vulnerability. To waking up anywhere unfamiliar.
Instead she felt warm.
Safe.
Only then did she fully realize she was curled tightly against a man’s chest, his body rising and falling slowly beneath her cheek, one heavy arm resting around her waist as though he had been holding her there for hours.
And somehow, impossibly, her mind stayed quiet.
No panic came. No instinct screaming at her to run. Her heart beat slowly, calmly, without the sharp painful rhythm she had grown used to over the years, and the realization unsettled her more than fear itself ever could.
She closed her eyes again, trying to understand what was happening to her, but the moment she allowed herself to think about the previous evening the warmth inside her deepened instead of fading. The memory of him returned with unbearable clarity. His mouth against hers. The way the world had disappeared the second he touched her. The overwhelming rush that had passed between them whenever their bodies met, so intense it had stopped feeling physical after a while and turned into stranger, deeper — reaching places inside her she had thought were permanently dead.
God.
It felt good.
Not exciting. Not reckless.
Good in a way she barely remembered people were capable of feeling.
For once her imagination wasn’t tearing her apart. For once her own mind wasn’t hunting for danger in every shadow and every touch. Considering what had happened the night before, she should have been spiraling already, dissecting every second, trying to convince herself she had lost control and made a mistake.
Instead all she wanted was to stay exactly where she was for a little longer.
She shifted closer without thinking, sinking deeper into the warmth of his body, and the response was immediate. The man beside her tightened his arm around her waist before his hand began moving slowly along her back in a lazy, affectionate caress that sent a deep shiver rolling through her body.
Not fear.
Nothing even close to it.
“Good morning, sweetheart.”
His voice was low and rough with sleep, the kind of voice that seemed to settle somewhere deep inside her rather than simply reaching her ears. Amelia lifted her eyes carefully, a flicker of unease finally returning as the memory of her nightmares pushed briefly to the surface. For weeks she had seen him only in darkness—black wings, endless shadows, eyes so inhuman they had followed her into waking life. Part of her had expected to find that same terrifying creature beside her now.
But the man looking down at her in the pale morning sunlight seemed heartbreakingly real.
The darkness surrounding him at night had softened beneath the sun, leaving behind someone devastatingly beautiful and strangely approachable. Whatever supernatural sharpness had haunted her dreams dissolved in daylight, and what remained was simply him: tired eyes, dark hair falling loosely across his forehead, tattoos winding down powerful arms, and a look on his face so openly tender that it almost hurt to hold his gaze for too long.
She realized too late that she had been staring.
The tension between them returned immediately, rising so fast it stole the air from her lungs. Her pulse stumbled hard inside her chest while heat spread low through her stomach with humiliating speed, and only one thought stopped her from pulling him down on top of her again.
She didn’t even know his name.
“Seth Raven,” he said softly, smiling with faint uncertainty, as though he had somehow heard the question forming inside her head.
Seth Raven.
The name settled strangely inside her, familiar in a way that made no sense.
Her gaze drifted down toward the tattoos covering his arms and she frowned slightly, noticing details she had missed in the dark.
“Feathers,” she murmured.
“Raven feathers.”
The smile that spread across his face this time was entirely different from the gentle one before. There was something openly male in it now, shameless and dangerously attractive, and the sudden rush of heat to her face made her look away before she embarrassed herself completely.
Trying to distract herself, she traced the tattoo nearest to her with careful fingertips—and immediately regretted it.
A violent shiver tore through her body.
Up close the tattoo barely resembled ink at all. It looked carved into his skin and filled with some strange black metallic substance threaded through with fragments of gold and silver that caught the sunlight whenever he moved. Beautiful. Brutal. Intimate enough to make her chest ache unexpectedly as she imagined the pain it must have taken to create something like that.
She looked up at him instinctively, eyes already softening with sympathy.
“It didn’t hurt,” Seth said quietly before she could ask.
The fact that he kept answering questions before she spoke them should have unsettled her.
Instead it only pulled her closer.
He kissed her then, gently at first, as though both of them still believed this could remain soft and controlled, but restraint vanished almost immediately. Within seconds he had shifted over her, one hand sliding beneath her waist while the other tangled into her hair, and the moment his mouth deepened against hers the entire world seemed to dissolve around them.
Nothing outside the bed felt real anymore.
Not the room.
Not the morning light.
Not the life she had left behind the previous evening.
There was only him and the impossible sensation building between them again, growing stronger every time their skin touched. His hands moved across her body with increasing hunger, learning her quickly, searching for every place that made her breathing break apart, but Amelia could barely think anymore. A hunger far larger than simple desire had already taken hold of her.
She wanted him.
Not carefully. Not rationally.
Completely.
The years of fear and tension that usually ruled her body seemed impossibly distant now, drowned beneath a need so overwhelming it almost frightened her. Maybe loneliness had finally become stronger than trauma. Maybe some exhausted part of her had simply stopped fighting the desire to be held this close to another person. Whatever the reason, the closer Seth pulled her, the more the emptiness inside her began to disappear.
And God, the relief of that nearly made her cry.
“Seth…”
His name slipped from her lips again and again, softer each time, until it stopped sounding like a name at all and became something closer to pleading. When his mouth found the sensitive place beneath her throat, her fingers tightened helplessly against his shoulders and a broken sound escaped her before she could stop it.
“Don’t stop…”
She meant it with everything she had.
Every touch only made her need him more. Her body answered his instinctively now, desperate for closeness, desperate for whatever impossible thing existed between them to keep growing. When his mouth moved lower and his control finally seemed to crack, Amelia caught sight of tiny golden particles lifting from her skin wherever he touched her, drifting lazily through the sunlight before disappearing against the darkness of his tattoos like sparks being pulled toward a fire.
The sight was so surreal it should have terrified her.
Instead it only made the hunger inside her worse.
By the time the words finally escaped her, she was too far gone to feel embarrassed.
“Take me, Seth.”
She looked up at him through unfocused eyes, breathless and burning for him so completely it hurt.
For one terrible, beautiful moment he looked exactly the same.
Then something changed.
Not abruptly. Not coldly.
But she felt it immediately.
Seth stopped moving and lifted his head slowly, staring down at her with an expression that tightened something painfully deep inside his chest. Amelia could see the conflict spreading across his face in real time, the sudden grief behind his eyes so sharp and unexpected that it cut through her desire almost instantly.
A second earlier he had wanted her just as desperately as she wanted him.
Now he looked like a man trying not to break apart.
He lowered himself against her instead, burying his face in her hair as though hiding there would somehow steady him, and Amelia lay frozen beneath him, confused and aching and still painfully unfinished.
“Did something happen?” she asked quietly.
The fear in her voice humiliated her immediately.
Seth only shook his head.
Neither of them spoke for a long time after that. His weight had felt intoxicating moments earlier; now it pressed the breath slowly from her lungs, and when she shifted beneath him restlessly he reacted at once, pulling himself away and gathering her carefully against his chest again.
“Sorry.”
The apology came fast enough to tell her he had noticed every change in her body.
But Amelia wasn’t willing to let this disappear into silence.
She pushed herself upright and turned toward him, pulling the sheet tightly around herself while trying to ignore the sudden collapse of confidence clawing through her chest.
“What happened?” she asked again, and this time her voice sounded dangerously close to tears.
Only minutes ago she had been ready to give him everything without hesitation. Her. Of all people. After years spent feeling untouchable, broken, too damaged to ever want someone this way again.
Seth sat beside her with his head lowered, elbows resting against his knees while he searched helplessly for words.
“We can’t rush this,” he said finally, his voice rough with restraint. “I know that probably sounds insane right now, but I can’t explain it yet.”
“Okay…” she whispered weakly, shifting toward the edge of the bed.
At once the old thoughts returned, vicious and familiar. Maybe reality had finally caught up with him. Maybe he regretted touching her. Maybe in daylight she simply wasn’t enough anymore.
The speed with which her confidence shattered made her feel pathetic.
“Hey.” Seth moved closer immediately, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “This doesn’t change anything.”
“I’m not sure about that.”
The disappointment in her voice was impossible to hide, and judging by the look on his face, hearing it hurt him badly.
“Jesus…” She buried her face in her hands. “I almost slept with a complete stranger.”
A quiet laugh escaped him then, soft and pained at the same time.
“No, my Angel,” he murmured. “That would’ve been the easy part. And believe me… I want you more than I know how to survive. But I don’t want to ruin this by rushing you into something before you truly know me. I want to do this properly. I want you to choose it fully when the time comes.”
She could hear the effort in every word.
Whatever restrained him was tearing him apart.
“To be honest,” he continued carefully, “normally I wouldn’t think this way at all. But with us… it matters.”
Us.
The word hit her strangely.
A cold memory stirred somewhere deep inside her mind.
Dreams.
Black wings.
Those eyes.
Amelia turned toward him slowly and studied him in silence long enough for tension to creep visibly into his expression.
“Who are you?”
This time the question landed hard.
Seth went completely still.
He couldn’t hide how much it hurt him to hear it. His eyes filled slowly with emotion before he finally looked away.
“Am…” His voice nearly broke. “My dearest…”
And just like that she understood she wasn’t getting the truth today.
The disappointment lingered painfully beneath her ribs, but even now the need to stay close to him outweighed everything else. After a long moment she moved behind him quietly and wrapped both arms tightly around his waist, pressing herself against his back while he sat motionless beneath her touch.
Just a little longer, she thought, closing her eyes again.
