Embers in the Dark

The kitchen fire never quite died.

In the deepest hours, when the manor held its breath, a low bed of coals pulsed in the great hearth like a secret heartbeat.

Ella knelt before it now, the heat licking at her skin through the thin linen shift she wore—her only armor against the night's chill. The fabric clung where sweat had gathered from the day's endless labor, outlining every curve she usually hid beneath layers of ash and drudgery.

She had come here seeking warmth, but the fire offered more than comfort tonight.

One hand rested on the warm stone hearth for balance; the other slipped beneath the hem of her skirt.

Fingers found slick heat between her thighs, already swollen from the fantasies that had simmered all day. She bit her lip as she circled slowly, teasing the sensitive bud at the apex, letting the rhythm match the crackle of the coals.

A soft gasp escaped her. The sound felt forbidden in the sleeping house, but that only made it sweeter.

She closed her eyes, imagining—not escape, but surrender. Strong hands pinning her wrists above her head.

A mouth trailing fire down her throat, claiming every inch of skin the ash had marked.

She pressed harder, slipping one finger inside herself, then two, curling them to chase the spark building low in her belly. Her hips rocked subtly against her palm, breasts aching beneath the shift, nipples tight and begging for touch.

She cupped one breast with her free hand, pinching the peak through the linen.

Pleasure spiked sharp and bright.

Her breath came in shallow pants, thighs trembling. She was close—so close—when the fantasy shifted: the stranger's voice whispering her name like a command, promising to unravel her until nothing remained but bliss.

A log cracked loudly in the fire.

Ella's eyes flew open, heart slamming against her ribs.

Footsteps.

Heavy, deliberate. Not a maid's light tread.

Lady Ravenna Black appeared in the doorway, silk robe the color of spilled wine trailing behind her like blood on marble. Her dark hair was pinned in elegant disarray, face painted even at this hour, lips curved in the knowing smile of someone who had caught prey mid-hunt.

Ella yanked her hand free, heat flooding her cheeks as she scrambled to smooth her skirt. The shift between her legs felt obscene now, slick and undeniable. She kept her gaze on the hearth, praying the firelight hid the flush on her skin.

"You are still awake," Lady Ravenna said, voice low and velvet-edged with venom. "Always awake. Always... indulging."

Ella stood slowly, hands clasped in front of her to hide their trembling. "The fires need tending, my lady. The house grows cold otherwise."

Ravenna stepped closer, the scent of rosewater and resentment curling through the air.

She circled Ella like a predator assessing weakness.

"Cold? You burn hot enough for the entire manor, girl. I can smell it on you—arousal mixed with soot. Pathetic."

Ella's stomach twisted, shame and hunger tangling tighter. She said nothing.

Ravenna reached out, catching Ella's chin with cool fingers, forcing her head up. Nails pressed just enough to sting.

"Look at me when I speak to you."

Her gaze raked down Ella's body, lingering on the damp patch darkening the front of her skirt, the way her chest rose and fell too quickly.

"Do you think I don't know what you do in the dark? Kneeling here like a bitch in heat, fingers buried in yourself while the rest of us sleep?"

Ella swallowed hard.

The words landed like slaps, but each one fed the ember between her legs instead of extinguishing it.

Ravenna's thumb traced Ella's lower lip, pressing until it parted.

"Your father thought you were something special. A lady in waiting. But look at you—covered in ash, dripping for fantasies no one will ever fulfill."

She leaned in, breath warm against Ella's ear.

"Do you imagine hands on you, Ella? A mouth tasting what you've wasted on your own fingers? Someone seeing past the filth and wanting to ruin you properly?"

Ella's thighs clenched involuntarily.

Heat pulsed where her fingers had been moments ago. She hated how her body responded—how the humiliation only sharpened the ache.

Ravenna laughed softly, a sound like breaking glass. She released Ella's chin and stepped back, trailing a single nail down the front of Ella's shift, grazing the swell of one breast.

"Tomorrow the invitation arrives—the royal ball. My daughters, Ophelia and Vivienne, will dazzle. They will dance under chandeliers while you scrub these stones."

Her eyes narrowed. "Extinguish the fire properly before you crawl to your attic. Or don't. Burn it all down. Just remember: no prince comes for ashes. And certainly not for a girl who pleasures herself like an animal in the kitchen."

She turned toward the stairs, robe whispering against the flagstones.

Silence returned.

Ella stood motionless until the footsteps faded entirely.

Then she sank back to her knees before the hearth. This time, she didn't hesitate.

Her hand returned between her legs, slick and urgent.

She bit down on her lip to muffle the moan as she thrust two fingers deep, thumb circling her clit in frantic rhythm. Lady Ravenna's words echoed—ruin you properly, dripping for fantasies—and they twisted inside her, fueling the fire. She imagined not just hands, but possession. Being stripped bare, spread open, taken until she shattered.

Her other hand pinched her nipple hard, pain blooming into ecstasy.

The coals popped. Sparks flew upward like stars.

Ella arched, body shuddering as release crashed over her in fierce waves. She muffled her cry against her forearm, thighs quaking, pleasure ripping through her until she collapsed against the warm stone, spent and trembling.

When her breathing steadied, she rose on unsteady legs. She banked the fire carefully, embers glowing low and steady.

Somewhere deep inside, a different ember refused to dim.

Tomorrow the invitation would come.

Tomorrow, perhaps, everything would change.

But tonight, Ella carried her secret heat upstairs to the narrow attic room, the taste of forbidden want still lingering on her skin.
