Locker room lights

The football field was quiet after practice, the sky fading into that soft orange-purple that only happened in early fall. Ram sat on the bleachers, helmet at his feet, staring at the grass like it might explain things he didn’t understand.

Kurt dropped down beside him with a thud, smelling like sweat and cheap deodorant. “Coach says we’re starting varsity next week,” he said, trying to sound proud, but his voice didn’t quite land. “Yeah,” Ram replied. “Cool.”

They sat in silence, listening to the distant sound of Veronica Sawyer laughing somewhere near the parking lot. Kurt nudged Ram’s shoulder. “You ever feel like everyone thinks they know who you are, but they really don’t?”

Ram blinked, surprised. Kurt usually joked his way through everything. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Kurt kicked at a pebble. “People think we’re just… idiots. Or jerks. Or whatever. But you’re not. And I’m—” He stopped, jaw tightening. “I don’t know. I’m not just that either.”

Ram stared at him. He wasn’t used to Kurt being serious. “You’re my best friend,” he said simply. “That’s… something.”

Kurt’s ears turned red. “Yeah. I guess it is.”

They walked toward the locker room, the hallway empty and echoing. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. Kurt paused at his locker, then looked at Ram like he was trying to work up courage for something.

“You ever think about leaving this place?” Kurt asked. “Like, actually leaving?”

“All the time,” Ram said. “Somewhere nobody expects us to be dumb football guys.”

Kurt smiled, softer than usual. “We could go somewhere together. College, maybe. Or just—get out.”

Ram felt a strange warmth in his chest. He’d never thought about it that way. “Yeah,” he said quietly. “Together.”

Kurt leaned back against the locker, grinning, but there was something sincere in his eyes. “Guess I’d be pretty lost without you, dude.”

Ram laughed, but his voice came out gentle. “Same.”

They stood there for a moment, not knowing what to say, not needing to. The hallway felt smaller, quieter, like the rest of the world had stepped back.

“Hey, Ram?” Kurt said.

“Yeah?”

“Thanks for not thinking I’m just what everyone else says I am.”

Ram shrugged, but he felt proud. “You’re Kurt,” he said. “That’s enough.”

Kurt smiled, and for once it wasn’t for anyone else.

And as they headed out into the cool evening air, Ram realized that maybe—just maybe—high school didn’t have to define them. Maybe the best part of their story hadn’t even started yet.

If you want, I can make it longer, more emotional, angsty, or set in the musical universe instead of the movie.
