Chapter 1
The trees creaked as the wind blew, carrying the sound of chains clashing against shackles. Animals scattered in panic, fleeing from the heavy, rushed footsteps pounding the forest floor. My breathing was uneven, ragged with fear. The footsteps behind me grew louder with each passing second, accompanied by shouts and screams. All I could think was: Run. Run as fast as you can.
Then I heard it - the name they had given me. “COME BACK HERE, EX001!”
I ignored the shouts and kept running. Pain shot through my feet as sticks and stones cut and scraped them raw. Blood mixed with dirt, bruises throbbed, but I didn’t stop. The edge of the forest loomed closer, signaling the near end of my escape.
Bursting out of the trees, I stumbled onto a road. I looked left, then right - only to see headlights bearing down on me. I threw my arms up to shield myself, bracing for impact, eyes squeezed shut. But the car screeched to a halt just in time.
Peeking through one eye, I saw the vehicle inches away. The driver stepped out - a middle-aged man with streaks of gray in his hair. His eyes held worry as he scanned me, lingering on my battered feet. Cuts, scrapes, bruises, dirt - it was clear I had been running, and running from something. His gaze dropped to the shackles on my wrists and ankles, and his concern deepened.
For a moment, I remembered the cold metal rooms I had been locked in, the endless tests, the voices that barked orders and numbers instead of names. The chains had been my constant companions, reminders that I was not free. That memory made me flinch as the man’s hand hovered near my shoulder, though he touched me gently.
Suddenly, shouts echoed from the forest’s edge. I froze, heart racing. The man’s voice was calm, steady. “Let me take you somewhere safe, away from whatever is frightening you. Get into the car - I’ll take you to a secure place.”
I glanced back at the forest, then hurried into the passenger seat. He slid behind the wheel. “Get down and hide before they see you. I’ll tell you when we’re clear.”
I crouched low, hidden beneath a jacket he draped over me. The engine roared to life, and we sped away.
After ten tense minutes, his voice softened. “We’re in the clear now. You can sit up. Keep the jacket on - it’ll keep you warm.”
I sat upright, slipping into the jacket. Only then did I realize how cold I was. Silence filled the car, comfortable and safe. Fatigue weighed on me, my eyelids drooping. The man noticed. “You can sleep. No harm will come to you.”
His words wrapped around me like a blanket. I surrendered to exhaustion, drifting into slumber as soft music played faintly from the radio.
Hours passed. I slept deeply, cocooned in safety. When we arrived, he didn’t wake me. Instead, he carried me inside a house and laid me gently on a bed. He fetched warm water and a cloth, cleaning the dirt and blood from my arms, legs, and feet. Then he returned with bandages and medical supplies. Carefully, he treated each wound - cleaning, covering, and wrapping them to protect and heal.
As he worked, I stirred faintly, half-dreaming. In my mind, I saw flashes of the facility I had fled: the sterile white walls, the echo of footsteps in long corridors, the way they had called me by a number instead of a name. I remembered the endless drills, the pain of shackles biting into my skin, and the constant reminder that I was property, not a person. But each time I opened my eyes, I saw only the man’s gentle movements, his quiet care, and the warmth of the room.
When he finished, he tucked me in, ensuring I was comfortable. Finally, he settled into an armchair nearby, keeping watch. My breathing slowed, soft and steady, as I slept under his protection.
For the first time in what felt like forever, I wasn’t running. I wasn’t hiding. I was safe. The chains on my wrists and ankles still clung to me, but in that moment, they felt lighter. Somewhere deep inside, a fragile hope began to stir - that maybe this was the beginning of freedom, the first step toward reclaiming my life.
