Fresh Start | Episode 1
Morning crept in quietly.
Sunlight slipped through the thin gap between the curtains, casting pale gold stripes across the room. Somewhere outside, the wind stirred, soft and almost careful, as if it did not want to wake anyone too suddenly. The air felt warm, familiar, wrapped in comfort.
Then
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
Harper groaned.
Her hand shot out from beneath the blankets, fumbling blindly until it smacked the clock silent. She lay there for a second longer, staring at the ceiling, before realization hit her all at once.
First day of school.
Her eyes widened. With a startled gasp, she sat upright, sheets tangling around her legs. The calm of the morning shattered as she scrambled out of bed and rushed to her wardrobe.
Clothes flew past her fingers, too plain, too loud, too not right. Finally, she paused. There it was. A cozy, vintage styled outfit that felt like her. She smiled faintly. Good enough.
The bathroom mirror fogged quickly as the shower steamed the room. Minutes slipped by beneath the rush of warm water, washing away the last of her sleep. When she stepped out, her hair hung wet down her back, droplets pattering softly onto the tiled floor as she hurried back into her room. She ran a towel through her hair, barely bothering to dry it properly, then grabbed her bag and bolted downstairs.
The smell hit her halfway down.
Coffee.
Rich and warm, curling through the air like a promise.
In the kitchen, Caleb stood by the counter, already dressed, already awake, annoyingly functional for someone who was her brother. A full breakfast sat neatly arranged, and beside it, a lunchbox waited.
"Here you go, princess," Caleb said, grinning as he slid the plate toward her. "You do not want to starve on your first day, do you? And" he lifted the lunchbox proudly, "I made this for you. With love."
He punctuated the words with an exaggerated heart gesture.
Harper rolled her eyes so hard it almost hurt. "Caleb, it is 2026," she said dryly. "You have never changed."
He chuckled, scoffing as he leaned against the counter. "Obviously. There is nothing to change. I am already a perfect guy."
She snorted. "Yeah. With no girlfriend."
Caleb laughed, shaking his head. "Hey. Soon. Just you wait."
Harper grabbed her bag. "Anyway, I am heading out. Bye."
"Wait," Caleb called.
She turned back, already bracing herself. "What now?"
He smirked, eyes glinting with mischief. "Maybe a kiss on the cheek?"
Harper recoiled instantly. "Ew. You are disgusting. Goodbye."
She yanked the door open and stepped outside, letting it slam shut behind her.
From the kitchen, Caleb's voice followed faintly, half laughing. "Wait, I was just"
Silence.
He sighed, staring at the closed door for a long moment. A small, thoughtful smile tugged at his lips.
"She has grown so much," he muttered softly. "Tsk."
The house settled again, coffee still warm, morning light still spilling in, while Harper stepped forward into a day that was only just beginning.
