Chapter 1
[Nancy’s House – Night]
Nancy Copper, a student at Harvard Law, sat at her desk staring at her first major case. She took a deep breath.
“This is it,” she whispered. “My first case… and it’s against a school.”
Her cousin Bethany, only 14, had been bullied relentlessly—by classmates, and shockingly, by her own teachers. Bethany had always loved TikTok, but trolls and even adults mocked her online. Now, she was being homeschooled for her safety.
Bethany walked in, clutching her favorite blanket.
Bethany: “Nancy… you don’t have to do this. Just let it go.”
Nancy: “If I let it go, bullying will never end, especially for kids your age.”
Bethany’s mother stepped in.
Mom: “Sweetie, thank you… but won’t this bring too much tension?”
Nancy: “Aunty, I’ve got you. I promise.”
Just then, Max, Nancy’s best friend, walked in.
Max: “Hi there, Superwoman.”
Nancy: “Hi, Max… I really need someone right now.”
Max: “I’m right here. Tell me what’s bothering you.”
Nancy: “It’s the case… my cousin… she’s so young. Why are adults and teens so mean?”
Max: “You’re amazing for doing this. She’s lucky to have you.”
He kissed her cheek gently. “I made your favorite banana cake. Thought you might need it.”
Nancy’s eyes lit up. “You did what? Oh my gosh!”
Max: “Yep. Now eat, then movie time.”
Nancy smiled, feeling a little lighter. “Thanks, Max. I needed that.”
[Nancy’s House – Morning]
Sunlight streamed into the room. Max had already prepared breakfast.
Max: “Good morning, beautiful. Hungry?”
Nancy: “Yes…”
Max: “Pancakes. Your favorite.”
Nancy (teasing): “Trying to win my heart more?”
Max (grinning): “I already own it.”
Nancy: “Thanks… I need to get ready. First case today.”
Max: “Outfit’s ready, lunch packed.”
Nancy: “You’re the best.”
Max: “Learned from the best. Go show them what Harvard Law taught you.”
Before leaving, Max kissed her forehead. “I believe in you.”
Nancy: “Thanks…”
[Courthouse – Morning]
The courtroom buzzed as everyone took their seats. Nancy stood confidently.
Judge: “You may proceed.”
Nancy: “Good morning. I am Nancy Copper, from Harvard Law. Today, I present the case: ‘Who Signed the Bullying Constitution.’”
She took a deep breath. “My client, 14-year-old Bethany, was bullied by her classmates… and by her own teachers. The school was aware and failed to act.”
She showed the judge screenshots from Bethany’s TikTok account and notes from teachers.
Nancy: “Whenever Bethany raised her hand, her math teacher, Ms. Howard, would say she couldn’t be seen—implying her skin color—and laugh along with the class.”
Nancy: “One day, she told Ms. Howard she was hungry. The teacher said, ‘You don’t need it.’ When Bethany explained she skipped breakfast, Ms. Howard added, ‘If you keep skipping, you might fit in.’”
Judge: “Ms. Valerie, please present your case.”
Valerie (opposing counsel): “Your honor, my clients, the school and Ms. Howard, have done nothing wrong.”
Nancy: “So you condone bullying a child?”
Valerie: “I never said that…”
Nancy: “Then prove your point. What fairness is in humiliating a child?”
The courtroom tensed.
Judge: “Silence in the courtroom.”
[Bethany Testimony]
Judge: “Bring in the child.”
Bethany walked in, nervous but brave.
Judge: “Hi, sweetheart. I love your outfit. You may speak freely here.”
Bethany: “I… I get bullied because I’m dark and overweight. My math teacher… Ms. Howard… says I can’t be seen, and the class laughs. One day, I told her I was hungry, and she said I don’t need it. She also said skipping breakfast might help me fit in.”
Judge: “Ms. Howard, did you say this?”
Ms. Howard (stammering): “I… it was just a joke.”
Nancy: “A joke? You’re joking with a child’s feelings?”
Judge: “Ms. Howard… do you have a child?”
Ms. Howard: “Yes… twelve years old.”
Judge: “Imagine your child being bullied by the adults assigned to protect them.”
The room went silent.
Nancy’s hands trembled slightly, but her voice stayed strong.
Nancy: “Your honor, this is not a joke. This is child mental abuse. We are asking the court to hold this school accountable.”
The case was just beginning, but Nancy knew one thing: she wouldn’t back down.
[Courthouse – The Verdict]
The courtroom was silent. All eyes were on the judge as she reviewed the evidence Nancy had presented—screenshots, emails, and Bethany’s testimony.
Judge: “After reviewing the case, I find that the school, through its staff, failed to provide a safe environment for students. The bullying, including actions by Ms. Howard, was unacceptable.”
Gasps filled the room.
Judge: “The school is hereby ordered to implement an anti-bullying program, provide training for all teachers on child mental health, and issue a formal apology to Ms. Bethany. Furthermore, the school will monitor student interactions to prevent further harassment.”
Bethany’s eyes widened, tears forming.
Bethany (whispering to Nancy): “You… you did it.”
Nancy (smiling, holding back tears): “No, we did it. Together.”
Ms. Howard looked down, ashamed. The courtroom was heavy with the weight of justice finally being served.
[Outside the Courthouse]
Nancy stepped outside into the sunlight. Max was waiting, holding a small bouquet of flowers.
Max: “You did it, Superwoman.”
Nancy (laughing softly): “We did it. Bethany’s safe now.”
Bethany ran into Nancy’s arms, hugging her tightly.
Bethany: “I feel… free. Thank you for standing up for me.”
Nancy: “You’ve always been brave, Beth. I just gave the world a little reminder.”
Max hugged both of them. “This is just the beginning. You two are unstoppable.”
[Bethany’s First Victory]
Weeks later, Bethany returned to school part-time, now with a supportive teacher and a safe environment. Her TikTok account flourished, filled with positivity and encouragement for other kids going through bullying.
Nancy watched proudly. She knew that this case was only her first—but it reminded her why she wanted to become a lawyer: to fight for those who couldn’t fight for themselves.
And as Max handed her a slice of banana cake one evening, Nancy smiled, knowing: some battles are won in court, but the most important ones are won in hearts.
