Decent story, wrong genre
"For the most part this was a decent story, I've read several of the authors novellas and they all follow a similar plot line. A woman scorned by her lover, mate, husband, walks away from him and rebuilds her life. One thing I have noticed is the inconsistencies in the plots. It's almost as though the author had multiple drafts for each story, decided on one path to follow, and then mistakenly deleted sections from each draft and put the remainders together. They come out fairly quickly so perhaps a slow down on submission would help the process. Some of the stories are fine, minor inconsistencies but nothing major, this story however is on the other side of the spectrum. Serious plot holes, sequences that make no sense, and a genre that has certain characteristics that aren't followed. This is why I say the genre was wrong. It doesn't work as a Mafia story, it would work as an old money family situation. Think a family with a house in the Hamptons and a billionaire heir. The ML is an underboss in his Fathers family, who is known as the Capo, with the FL, his wife aka the Donna. The Donna is told she is barren, so she cannot provide the husband with an heir. Since bloodlines are crucial in Mafia families a solution is found. The Capo arranges for a surrogate to come in, become pregnant and then be paid for the child, which the Donna is then forced to raise as her own. It becomes apparent soon after that the surrogate is the lover of the Underboss with a faked history. The Capo is aware, is unhappy the Son has set aside his wife, and arranges for an escape plan for the wife. It's explained later why he does this but the escape plan is flawless. Here's where the story devolves. The author spends a decent amount of time setting up the escape plan, the Capo arranges everything and then...for some unknowable reason, throws it all away just before the Donna escapes. It makes no sense. Rather than the Donna vanishing into the wind, the Capo uses the situation as a hammer to break down the ML. Only after he is shown the truth of the situation does the FL leave. The FL, with a new name, sets up in Paris and begins her new life. Then another weird sequence happens, the ML discovers the truth about the surrogate, but takes her to Paris on a vacation...with the Capo's approval to see how she reacts outside the family home. The Capo knows the FL is there, makes zero sense why he would send them there. The rest of the tale is predictable. ML realizes his grave error, tries to get back with his former wife, is rebuffed completely, and both end up apart. One plothole involves the diamond necklace the wife is given in her first year of marriage, she takes it with her to Paris, sells it to fund her new lifestyle...yet the escape plan involved offshore accounts for that very purpose. Besides the fact that jewelry such as the necklace are commissioned and tagged at purchase, so the husband could search for the necklace, find it sold in Paris and search there for his former wife. Why take the chance? especially as it wasn't needed. Another issue, the story starts in New York, which is where the family is located. The new life for the wife is in Paris. Yet the last several chapters involve meetings between both the FL and ML on repeated instances, completely oblivious of the travel time between both points. The author treats both locations like they are next to each other, and while Paris is many things...it's not New Jersey. If you read these novellas then my best advice to you is to suspend disbelief for the life of the story, ignore the plot holes and just move on. I can't say I don't enjoy them, as short as they are I treat them like a guilty pleasure. I get a certain amount of revenge in a small package. "
