Flavius y su compañero Cayo son convocados a una misteriosa reunión nocturna en una mansión del Palatino, allí descubren que se verán envueltos en una oscura conspiración de la que dependerá el futuro de Roma, en la cual se ven arrastrados a un vendaval de traición y violencia mientras luchan por sus vidas en los penumbrosos callejones del centro de Roma.
La aventura transcurre en las calles de la Roma repúblicana, calles como la Clivus Victoriae, el Palatino, la zona de los ricos y senadores, los mercados como el Forum Boarium, la Puerta Esquilina y los templos de Juno, Hércules y Fortuna, además de los muelles del Tíber. Se menciona además el Ponto, un reino enemigo de Roma en aquellos días de revueltas y guerras a lo largo y ancho de los dominios romanos.
