PROLOGUE
Delicate, fragrant, and full of grace.
In the hush of a dimlit room, a floral arrangement rested atop a decorative ceramic vase-fluted, softly rounded, its vertical ridges gathered like fabric drawn inward by gentle hands. A glossy pink bow cinched its middle, feminine and deliberate, while the mouth of the vase bloomed outward in petal-like folds. It was ornamental, intentional-beautiful in a way that suggested someone who noticed details.
The phone alarm shattered the stillness.
A groan slipped from her lips as she reached blindly across silk sheets, pushing aside a floral-print duvet. A thud followed. Then another-sharp, careless. Pain hissed between her teeth as she leaned over the edge of the bed, fingers closing around her phone.
2:00 AM.
"Today's the day," she murmured, a grin breaking across her face before sleep had fully left her eyes.
Habit carried her toward the bathroom. Her blush-pink nightdress skimmed her legs, lace tracing the edges like a quiet rebellion against softness. Thin straps clung to her shoulders, a ribbon swaying with each step. She shed it without ceremony, leaving it behind as the tub filled-steam rising, bubbles gathering thick and ivory-white. Rose petals drifted across the surface, crimson against porcelain, some floating, others sinking slowly into warmth and silence. When she slipped beneath the waterline, the world paused with her.

Across the city, morning claimed a different rhythm.
He stepped out of a sleek black Mercedes-Benz S-Class, one AirPod already in place, music dulling the noise of London as it surged around him. UCL rose ahead-stone and symmetry, history worn like impeccable tailoring. Grand facades met modern glass, restraint meeting ambition.
A banner stretched above the courtyard. UCL × UAL - Annual University Fair. Bright. Loud. Designed to impress.
To him, it felt indulgent. Excessive. Almost tedious.
Students crowded the grounds, laughter ricocheting off limestone, styles colliding in motion. He adjusted the strap of his bag, gaze already drifting past the chaos toward the Research Meets Design booths ahead. That was where purpose lived. Everything else felt ornamental.
She arrived from the opposite end of the courtyard, heels clicking with satisfaction. She liked the sound-sharp, confident. Her skirt moved with her, fabric catching air as she slipped between stalls, fingers grazing textiles, eyes drinking in silhouettes and seams. From UAL, she brought curiosity, edge, hunger. From UCL, she felt structure pushing back. The tension thrilled her.
The fair thickened. Bodies pressed closer. Movement became negotiation.
He pushed forward.
She turned too late.
The collision was sudden-hands catching, balance betraying them both. They fell in a tangle of surprise and breath, laughter flaring briefly before the crowd swallowed it again.
She looked up first.
Eye contact-startled, held, broken.
She scrambled upright, brushed at her clothes, reached for her bag. A smudge. Small. Devastating. Her heart dipped, drama contained just shy of tears.
"I'm so sorry," she said quickly, words soft and rushed, a nervous smile lifting her mouth. "The crowd decided otherwise."
He was already standing, dusting himself off, unbothered. Then he looked at her properly.
Golden-black eyes. Hair dark and precise, softened by movement. Composed, even shaken.
"It's fine," he said easily. "Really."
And just like that, he turned away-disappearing into the crowd as if the moment had never happened.
She stood there longer than she meant to, fingers tightening around her bag, watching the space he left behind.
Somehow, she knew this wasn't an ending.
Only the opening.
