The Forbidden Border

Two kingdoms lived beneath the same sun, yet under very different shadows: the cold, majestic castles of the Vampires and the wild, ancient forests of the Werewolves. A centuries-old hostility—an ingrained hatred—rose along the border like an invisible wall. And years ago, two hearts had dared to cross that wall, complicating everything.

A vampire woman and a werewolf man.

Their forbidden love carried a secret that terrified both kingdoms: a hybrid child. Fear triumphed over reason; with the aid of dark magic cast by witches and sorcerers, that innocent life was ended before it was even born. From that day on, the borders hardened, the rules became stricter, and hostility settled into an icy silence.

Yet the kingdoms did not stand still. Monthly council meetings were held to preserve the fragile peace, keeping at least a narrow channel of dialogue open. It was during one of these meetings that Princess Lilith of the Vampire Kingdom noticed Kael, the Werewolf Crown Prince—and her mind became fixed on a dangerously wild idea.

“Elara, please! Just for one hour. I need to test my powers—maybe I do have one, and it simply hasn’t awakened yet!”

Elara, lost in thought as she gazed out the window with her violet eyes, startled at Lilith’s insistent voice. The princess’s impatience and recklessness irritated her. Lilith was only eighteen, of royal blood, yet she lacked the most precious thing a vampire could possess: a special ability. Elara, on the other hand, was twenty-two, born into an ordinary family, but her telekinetic power had drawn significant attention. With her mind, she could move objects—and even living beings. This gift had elevated her status within the vampire hierarchy and caught the royal family’s interest. There was even a possibility she might be married to Crown Prince Adrian, a union that would serve Elara’s ambition to gain influence within the ruling circle. But first, there had to be stability. First, peace.

“Lilith, the forest is too close to the border. It could be dangerous,” Elara replied, her voice calm but firm. Her intelligence always took precedence; she was scarcely aware of her own beauty, though her gaze shimmered with an almost hypnotic brilliance, and her silver hair glowed as if illuminated by moonlight.

“But you’ll be with me! Your powers will protect us,” Lilith pleaded, widening her innocent blue eyes.

Elara sighed. The princess was her closest friend, and protecting her had become something of a duty. Perhaps Lilith was right—perhaps she did possess a dormant power, and discovering it could give her confidence.

“Fine,” Elara murmured at last. “But only for one hour. And we stay away from the border.”

Lilith’s face lit up with a triumphant smile. The plan was working.

At sunset, the forest was drenched in fiery reds and deep purples. Elara scanned their surroundings with sharp awareness, missing not even the slightest movement. Lilith, meanwhile, wandered about excitedly, touching trees and making odd sounds.

“Look! Let’s go there—it’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset!” Lilith suddenly shouted, running toward the border markers.

“Lilith, wait! That’s too far!” Elara called after her, but the princess ignored her. Elara’s instincts flared. She paused, listening carefully. The snap of a distant branch. The rustle of leaves. Then—a sharp, unmistakable scent.

Werewolf.

Panic surged as she ran after Lilith. The princess had stopped beside a stone pillar, breathing hard, staring at the three figures before her. Three broad-shouldered men with glowing golden eyes. Their clothing was simple, but their muscular bodies radiated menace. They lifted their heads and inhaled deeply.

“Vampires,” growled the tallest one, his voice a low, guttural rumble. “What are you doing on our land?”

Elara immediately stepped in front of Lilith. “We lost our way. We’ll leave at once,” she replied coolly. Revealing the princess’s identity would be disastrous—a perfect excuse for war.

“Getting lost means you think we’re fools,” another sneered, his claws extending as fur rippled across his skin. They were on the verge of transformation.

There was no time.

Elara closed her eyes and focused. Her telekinetic energy surged outward like an invisible wave. The nearest werewolf lifted into the air and was hurled into a tree without being touched. The second was seized by stones and roots erupting from the ground, trapping his legs. The third collapsed to the earth, stunned by a mental strike.

“Run!” Elara shouted, grabbing Lilith’s arm. They vanished into the forest at vampiric speed. But their scent betrayed them. Growls and pounding footsteps echoed from every direction. They tried to hide, to hold their breath, but the circle tightened.

At last, they burst into a small clearing—and found themselves surrounded. At least fifteen werewolves stood in half-human, half-wolf forms, their eyes blazing with fury. At the front stood an older one, his face scarred and hardened by years of battle.

“Well, well,” he mocked. “Arrogant vampires sneaking into our territory. We’ll tear you apart and bury you so deeply no one will ever find what’s left.”

Lilith trembled, clinging to Elara’s arm. Elara’s mind raced—escape routes, weak points—but they were outnumbered. She kept her expression neutral, her gaze analytical, refusing to show the despair rising within her.

Just as the order to attack was about to be given, a powerful, commanding voice thundered through the forest:

“STOP.”

Everyone turned toward the sound. From the shadows stepped a lone figure—tall, broad-shouldered, with an unmistakably noble bearing. His dark brown hair fell in waves, and his golden eyes, like those of the others, held a deeper intelligence. His sharp features combined raw savagery with aristocratic grace.

“Crown Prince Kael,” the older werewolf murmured, bowing his head in respect, though unease colored his voice.

Kael moved forward, his gaze briefly passing over the trembling Lilith before settling on Elara. His eyes lingered on her for a fraction longer—surprise, curiosity, something more flickering through them—before his expression hardened.

“What is happening here?” Kael demanded coldly. “A border violation?”

“These two vampires entered our territory without permission. We were about to punish them,” the elder explained.

Kael turned to Elara. “Explain.”

Lilith blurted out, her voice shaking yet eager. “Crown Prince Kael! I—I am Princess Lilith, and this is my companion Elara. We were training in the forest and crossed the border without realizing it. Please forgive us!”

Elara inhaled slowly. Lilith had revealed her identity. Things had just become far more complicated.

Kael raised an eyebrow. He recognized Princess Lilith from the council meetings—but his attention remained fixed on the silent vampire beside her.

“That is not the one who usually accompanies you at the council,” he noted coolly.

“Elara is my closest friend and my protector,” Lilith added quickly. “She has extraordinary abilities.”

“I noticed,” Kael replied shortly, his gaze still on Elara. He then turned to the others. “All of you, disperse. I will handle this matter. Planning violence over a border incident is not acceptable.”

Though they hesitated, Kael’s authority was absolute. One by one, they withdrew into the forest, leaving the three alone.

“You should not have been here,” Kael said again, his voice softer but still distant. “This could have been grounds for war.”

Elara finally spoke, her tone composed and rational. “You’re right, Crown Prince. But there is no need for this to escalate. We can return quietly and say nothing. Tensions are already high—a small spark could ignite everything.”

“But we broke the law!” Lilith protested. “We can’t hide it!”

Elara shot her a sharp look, then turned back to Kael. “The princess is young and inexperienced. I will accept the punishment. All I ask is that this does not become a cause for conflict between our kingdoms.”

Kael studied her carefully. Her intelligence, sense of responsibility, and composure impressed him. And her beauty was impossible to ignore—depth shimmered in her violet eyes, moonlight gleamed in her silver hair. Against his better judgment, he found himself agreeing.

“Then you will bear the punishment,” Kael decided, his gaze locked on Elara. “The princess is young; it is right that you take responsibility. Return quietly. But remember—there will be no forgiveness if this happens again.”

Lilith beamed with relief. “Thank you, Crown Prince! You’re very kind!”

Kael acknowledged her with a brief nod, then looked back at Elara. “I will escort you to the border. To ensure your safe passage.”

As they walked, Lilith talked endlessly—about Kael’s kingdom, the councils, trivial things. Kael responded with short, clipped answers, his attention subtly drawn to Elara’s silent presence. Elara remained quiet, analyzing him—cold, controlled, intelligent. Yet at times, when their eyes met, something stirred beneath his restraint.

When they reached the border, Kael stopped. “This is far enough. I do not want to see you here again.”

Lilith thanked him once more. Elara merely inclined her head slightly, still expecting clarification about her punishment. Kael said nothing—he simply looked at her with those deep, golden eyes.

As the two vampires stepped onto their own territory, Elara suddenly turned her head. She felt it—a ripple in her mind, a voice.

“Come to the border at midnight. You will learn your punishment then.”

It was Kael’s voice. His lips had not moved.

The sensation lasted only seconds, but it was unmistakably real. Elara blinked, startled.

“Elara? What is it? Are you alright?” Lilith asked.

Elara steadied herself. “Nothing. Just a moment of dizziness. It’s passed.”

As they continued on, Lilith chattered excitedly. “He totally went easy on us, didn’t you see? Maybe he couldn’t resist me!”

But Elara wasn’t listening. Her thoughts were fixed on that voice. How could the werewolf crown prince communicate mentally? Telepathy was rare even among vampires. Was it an illusion? A potion? Witches were known to brew mind-altering elixirs—but for Kael to possess such knowledge seemed unlikely.

Midnight. The border. The meeting.

Was it a trap? Or truly about her punishment?

The risk was great. But unanswered questions were even greater.

And somehow, those cold, golden eyes refused to leave her mind.

Princess Lilith had never considered that the crown prince might possess such abilities—but Elara had.

And she had made her decision.

At midnight, she would go to the border.
