I was prying at the lock and smiled as I heard a successful click when the door unlocked. I shook my head, pitying the poor saps who still used old fashioned locks and not the dead bolts.

I carefully opened the door into a dark room and looked around. Great, nobody was home. I went into the kitchen and opened the fridge, grabbing cheese, bread, apples and whatever else I could find.

Then the overwhelming feeling of fear came over me and I cursed under my breath.

A boy a couple years older than me with dark hair came lunging out holding a baseball bat in his hands.

“Hold it right there!” He shouted.

I spun around in surprise.

“There’s about ten of us and only one of you.” He shouted over his shoulder.

I raised an eyebrow at him, still holding an armful of food. “Are you referring to your split personalities?” I asked with a smirk.

The boy flipped on the kitchen lights and looked me over, trying to decide how much of a threat I was. I felt his fear subside.

“Are you raiding our kitchen?” He asked.

I looked at the items in my arms and felt myself turn red. “I was... hungry.” I replied.

He put down the bat. “Wait, you broke into our house for food?” He asked.

I sighed. “Burglars get hungry too you know.”

He picked up the telephone and dialed a number.

“Who are you calling?” I asked.

“My dad’s the sheriff.” He said.

My eyes widened. “You’re calling the cops?” I asked.

Before he could react, I shoved past him and ran out the door with him calling after me. I kept running into the forest until I ran out of breath. I broke through the forest until I came to a road and slowed my pace. I smiled to myself, I doubt he’d find me now.

Just then two cop cars lights lit up the area along with a police sirens.

I threw up my hands in frustration, they had me surrounded. An older man stepped out of one of the cars coming towards me.

“Hey, take it easy. I’m just going to bring you to the station.” He said.

I decided to chance it and ran back towards the forest. A younger looking man from the second cop car got out and ran after me, jumping me from behind. I fell face forward, scraping my chin as he handcuffed me from behind. He helped me up, and escorted me to the back of his police car.

I sat on the bench in the cell feeling glum when the sheriff came in.

“Hi, I’m sheriff Stilinksi. What’s you’re name?” He asked.

“I’m Danelle.” I muttered.

“Well, you’re quite the drama queen aren’t ya?” He asked.

I glared at him. “I didn’t even steal anything buddy, you’re the one overreacting.”

“Well for one it was my house, and two I arrested you for breaking and entering.” He said.

I thought of a comeback but simply shook my head and looked away.

“You have any parents that we can call?” He asked.

I refused to look at him and muttered under my breath, “You’re lucky i’m not at full power buddy.”

“What?” He asked.

“I don’t have any parents.” I said.

“Hey.” The boy I met earlier came walking in. “Oh good you caught her.”

“She gave us quite the chase.” Sheriff Stilinski said.

Sheriff Stilinski turned to me. “I believe you met my son. This is Stiles.”

I rolled my eyes at him.

“Nice to meet you.” I said, “Thank you so much for having me thrown in jail by the way. Such a lovely view.”

They both just looked at me for a second before Stiles turned to his dad. “Can I talk to you for a second?”

They walked out of the room, but I could see them discussing something. After a few minutes they came back in.

“Are you homeless?” Stiles asked.

“I am until I break into someone’s house.” I said and laughed at my own joke.

They didn’t laugh.

“I... yeah I guess I am. It’s not a crime ya know.” I said.

Stiles stepped forward. “We’d like you to come live with us.”

I just looked at them stunned. Were they joking? This had to have been a joke for breaking and entering, but they looked serious.

“You don’t even know me.” I said, “Why would you offer something like that?”

“Well, if you don’t want to we can always drop you off at a foster care center until you turn 18.” Stiles said with a shrug.

“Hey, I didn’t say I didn’t want to.” I said.

Stiles just smiled at me. He seemed sweet.

“You really want me to come live with you?” I asked.

“Well yeah. That’s why I called my dad. You freaked out and ran out house before I could say anything.” Stiles said.

“Oh.”

“Oh.” He repeated with a smile.

“What’s the catch?” I asked.

“The catch is you don’t go breaking and entering any more houses.” Sheriff Stilinski spoke up.

I couldn’t say anything so I just nodded.

Stiles led me down the hallway and into a spare bedroom. “This is the guest room where you will be staying. I’m down the hallway if you need anything.” He said.

“Thanks Stiles.” I said.

“No problem, I can help you enroll in school tomorrow.” He said.

“Wait, what? School?” I asked.

“What’s wrong?” He asked.

“Well, I don’t really go that often.” I admitted.

He nodded, understanding. “It’s okay. I’ll go with ya, it’ll be fine.”

The sheriff stopped back at the house later with bags of fries, burgers and some sodas. I looked at it, my mouth watering.

“Here.” He said, handing some food to me.

“Thanks.” I said.

The doorbell rang while we ate and Stiles got up to answer it. A girl with red hair came in looking me up and down. “Yeah these should fit her.”

“This is Lydia.” Stiles introduced.

Lydia came closer and dropped a bag of clothes in front of me. “Just some old stuff I don’t wear any more.”

“Be nice.” Stiles hissed at me, “She’s here to help.”

“I’m always nice.” I said. “Hi Lydia. I’m Danelle. Thanks, you didn’t have to do this.”

“Oh by the way you’re dressed, yes I do.” She smiled.

I smiled at her, not sure what to make of all this kindness.

I found out I was in my freshman year, two grades behind Stiles.

“Hey Danelle, over here.” Stiles called out.

I walked over to his locker smiling. A handsome looking boy stood next to Stiles.

“I’m Scott McCall.” He introduced.

“Yes you are.” I said with a big grin and shook his hand.

Scott laughed as Stiles rolled his eyes at me and introduced me.

“You look tired Stiles, didn’t you get any sleep last night?” I asked.

“No, not really.” He said.

The school bell rang.

“Don’t worry about me. You get to class okay?” He said.

The sound of screaming in the middle of the night had me sitting bolt upright, my eyes widened and my heart was pounding. Was that Stiles? I timidly walked down the hall to Stiles room and carefully peeked in. Stiles was freaking out as his dad rocked him back and forth, soothing him.

I looked at Sheriff Stilinski with concern. He saw me and nodded that it was okay and motioned for me to go back to bed.

“Are you okay?” I asked Stiles as he drove me to school the next morning.

“Yeah, I’m fine honey. It was just a bad dream, don’t worry about it.” Stiles said.

Stiles and the rest of his friends all seemed on edge. I could feel their anxiety but didn’t dare tell them about myself yet. I wasn’t sure they were ready to know I wasn’t human. They seemed to have their own problems anyway.

“Get to class, don’t be late again today okay?” Stiles said.

I nodded and watched him rush off. Poor Stiles continued having nightmares, screaming himself awake almost every night. I wanted to help, but had no idea what I could do for him. I was still getting to know him.

Eventually, Stiles nightmares stopped. Everything seemed to return to normal, until one day when the school went on lock down looking for some murderer.

I found Stiles and his friends outside.

“Hey guys. Looks like some idiot pulled the fire alarm.” I said.

“I’m sure that idiot had a great reason.” Stiles said.

I tried to pry information out of Stiles about what was happening, but his over protectiveness kept me in the dark as usual.

One night I sat at the table, snacking on some cookies. The power was out all over the city. Stiles was on his way out when he saw me.

“Did you do your homework?” He asked.

“No lights to see anything.” I said with a smile and shrugged.

Stiles stopped and looked through some kitchen drawers, pulled out a flashlight and set it on the table in front of me.

“Oh gee thanks. You are just way too helpful sometimes.” I said.

Stiles winked and pointed at me. “Homework.” He said.

The house was quiet after he left, and a bit spooky. I thought I saw the shadows move and tried to ignore the creepy feeling. I stopped doing my homework as an odd sound echoed through the house. I listened but there was no noise and tried once again to focus on my homework. The sound returned and I realized the shadows were moving for real. I bolted out of my chair and tried to run as a man rose up through the floor. There were several of them as they surrounded me with glowing eyes. I froze as one of them touched the side of my head and everything went black.

I woke up sometime later in the night curled up on the floor. I was shivering violently as I grabbed a blanket from the hallway closet. Stiles hadn’t come home yet. For some reason I didn’t tell him about the strange men.

One night I was helping Stiles make dinner. He was slicing up some carrots for a salad.

“Ow! Damnit!” He cried out, dropping the knife. He had sliced his hand, blood flowed freely from the wound.

I grabbed his hand on instinct, hovering my hand over it for a second. The wound on his hand completely vanished.

He stared at it in wonder when I cried out, grabbing my own hand. I froze, realizing my mistake. He took my hand, slowly prying it away as I had cradled it. The wound from his hand had appeared on my own hand.

“What did you just do?” He whispered.

I took a step away, not sure what he would think of me now.

“Hey. It’s okay. I’m just curious what you are.”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. I can feel people’s dark emotions and take their wounds. I’ve always been able to. Do you think I’m a freak now? If you want me to leave now, I’ll understand.”

He smiled and drew me into a hug. “No way. This doesn’t change anything between us. You’ll always be welcomed here.” He said.

The phone rang in the middle of the night. When no one answered it, I made my way to the phone wondering why no one was in the house. Was Stiles still asleep?

“Hello?” I asked, rubbing sleep from my eyes.

“Danelle, I need to know if you’ve seen Stiles tonight?” Scott asked.

“Hold on.” I made my way to Stiles room, but it was empty.

“He’s not here. Stiles isn’t in the house.” I said.

“No, I know that. Did anything happen tonight?” He asked.

“Not that I know of, I’ve been asleep. Why, what is wrong? Did something happen to Stiles” I asked.

“Stiles called me and he doesn’t know where he is. He’s missing.” Scott said.

“Do you want me to help look for him?” I asked.

“No. Just stay there okay? Don’t go anywhere. If he calls or comes back to the house give me a call.” Scott said.

“Okay.” I said.

I waited for what felt like forever, worrying about Stiles. I wanted to go out and search for him, but decided to listen to Scott. Finally I got another phone call. Stiles had been found and was sleepwalking.

I sighed with relief. He had to stay at the hospital for tests, so I visited him after School.

“Hey.” He greeted.

I ran up and hugged him as soon as I saw him. “Are you okay?”

“I don’t know. They got to run a few more tests.” Stiles said. Even though he smiled, he looked sad.

Scott arrived and put an arm around me, “Here why don’t you go get a candy bar from the snack machine okay?” He said. He gave me some money and I nodded, looking back at Stiles one more time before leaving.

When I got home, I saw a note in my bedroom. I opened it and frowned as I read it.

I know what you are. You’re mine. You and I are going to have some fun soon.
