Amish Dreams
"This is a collection of four short stories. The first three revolve around three Amish siblings and their parents. The parents are Abraham and Mary Graber; and their children include Martha, Sarah, and John. The last story allows the reader to become acquainted with the Millers; consisting of the Bishop, his wife, and their daughter, Rebecca.
These people all live in an Amish community and live very simple lives. Most of the men farm their land to provide for their families. The women stay home, cook, clean, and raise their children. The women sometimes sell baked goods at the outdoor markets.
While the Amish people live simple lives, they also live by very strict rules and guidelines as outlined by their religion. Often times young people are not allowed to marry their chosen mate; the marriages are arranged by the parents. Before marriage, young adults are required to reach the proper age, take classes, and become baptized.
Subsequently, some young ones rebel against the rules of the Amish community and choose mates or careers in what is known to the Amish as belonging in the "Englisher world". Such is the case with the siblings and the Bishop's daughter in these stories. Due to these circumstances they have the possibility of being shunned from their community.
Knowing shunning is a possibility, all of the siblings and the Bishop's daughter expire
to have dream careers or marriages that would not seem appropriate to the Amish community.
Ms. Becker writes with such passion that the characters actually come to life on the page. It is though the reader is there living through them. The reader can feel the love and compassion the young people have towards the mate they have chosen for themselves as well as their emotions. They can also sense the importance their dream careers mean to them. The reader can also feel the pain felt by these people as they work through the obstacles they encounter along the way.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a fresh, clean Amish romance. It is truly inspiring, and the reader learns along with the characters the importance in having faith and trust in God. Congratulations, Ms. Becker, for creating yet another masterpiece; and I look forward to reading more books by you!
