Chapter 1 : The day the sky opened
Ayla stepped closer ,reading her name again and again to make sure it wasn’t a dream.Ayla Demir. -First position. Selected for International scholarship program .South Korea.
“ South Korea”.The notice board had never looked so terrifying .
Ayla and Alexa stood in the middle of the crowded college hallway, fingers tightly wrapped around their bag strap . The final results were pinned in neat rows, but Ayla’s vision blurred before she could even focus.
“Breathe ,”Alexa whispered dramatically beside her.’If you faint iam not carrying you.I love you ,but i have limits.”Ayla almost laughed-.
Students pushed forward ,cheers echoing through the corridor. Some cried ,some screamed and some just stood frozen.
Alexa gasped first .
“Oh . My . God.’
Ayla’s heart stopped . “What ? What happened ? Did i fail ? Did I -”
You topped.’
Silence .
The world slowed .
“What ?” Ayla blinked .“ You topped the department .’ Alexa grabbed her shoulders and shook her . “AND there is a scholarship notice attached to your name !”
The hallway noise faded into a soft hum.
Her breath trembled.
For years she had sung her dreams quietly -on rooftops,in empty classrooms ,into the night sky.She had whispered her fears and hopes in silent conversations with God,asking for strength ,for direction, for just one chance.
And now…..this.
Alexa screamed again and hugged her so tight Ayla could barely breathe.
“You are going to Korea! You are leaving me ! How dare you be successful without me?”she said dramatically. Ayla laughed through the tears.
“You are coming too,idiot.look here”.
On the second row there was the name of Alexa .Second Position. just right below the name of Ayla.
Oh right.I forgot Iam also talented.”
They both burst into giggles
Ayla was the kind of girl who had learned ,from a very young age,how to carry the weight of the world on her own shoulders .Life had never been easy but she never complained . While others leaned on support, she quietly became her own strength .She had promised herself one thing as a child-she would never let her parents bow their heads in disappointment.
And she never did.Every late night ,every tear she wiped away silently ,every rejection she swallowed without breaking -it all led to this moment. She had won.The most competitive scholarship in South Korea .For a few seconds ,she couldn’t even believe .Classmates,Teachers everyone Congratulate her.
But when the laughter settled , Ayla looked up at the sky through the corridor window.Sunlight filtered in gently.Quietly ,in her heart, she whispered,Thank you.For hearing me even when i didn’t know how to ask properly.
Her heart was racing ,her eyes were filling with tears ,and her lips were trembling with a smile she couldn’t control. She was happy.she was excited .she was grateful.A thousands of emotions were blooming inside her all at once. And more than anything -she had made her parents proud once again.
When she went home with the news and told them everything about result and scholarship, her voice shook. But when she saw the tears in her mother’s eyes and the quiet pride in her father’s smile ,she knew …..
Every strugle had been worth it.At that moment ,Ayla wasn’t just a girl chasing dreams. She became a dream that had finally taken flight.
Two weeks later ,after they celebrated their graduation ceremony ,Ayla and Alexa both went to Airport.Suitcases, announcements, families hugging tightly ,the smell of coffee and goodbyes . At that moment Airport felt unreal. Alexa was crying again.
“Iam not crying because I’m sad,”she sniffed. “I’m crying because airport lighting is emotional.”
Ayla smiled softly .Her parents stood close, pride shining in their eyes. Not rich. Not powerful. But full of belief in their daughter .Her father held her hand and said. “Be Brave.”Her mother had tears and happiness both in the eyes cause her precious daughter was leaving and she can no longer see her daughter everyday but she was happy because her daughter was going to pursue her dreams. Ayla was also holding back her tears .When the boarding announcement echoed through the terminal ,her heart beat faster.
As she stepped toward the gate, she paused for one second.
She looked back.Ayla felt like she was leaving pieces of herself behind.
Not just a city.
Not just a house .
But memories.
Some bitter,some sweet.
Memories of laughter echoing through narrow hallways.
Of late-night talks on the Rooftop.Of silent tears no one ever saw.
She was leaving behind her little sister, the tiny girl.Only ten years old. Who was crying for Ayla to not leave her.
The way she had cried that morning ,refusing to let go,made Ayla’s heart ache in ways she couldn’t explain.
She was leaving behind the memories of her late grandmother too.
The loss that had once shattered her world.
The empty chair in the corner of the room.
The prayers whispered with trembling lips. But that pain had shaped her.strengthened her.changed her.
Yes…. she was leaving many things behind. But she wasn’t going empty - handed. She was carrying her broken heart with her-the silent reminder of a love that never became hers. She was carrying a new beginning,a new future. A whole new world waiting for her. There was energy in her veins .Fire in her dreams.Passion in her heartbeat.
And ofcourse-Right beside her stood her troublemaker best friend. The one who had been there for every breakdown ,every laugh attack, every dramatic speech, every ridiculous plan. Her partner in pain,in happiness,in chaos. The only person who understood her without saying anything.
Ayla took one last deep breath and went inside the airport with her bestfriend.
She didn’t know what waited for her in Korea but she wasn’t afraid this time.Because she was no longer just a girl with memories-She was a girl with wings now.
She didn’t know about the unexpected friendships, the music, the teasing smiles, the quiet glances,or the unexpected love that would slowly find her .
All she knew was this-
She had sung her dreams to the sky.And the sky had answered.
