Summary

Peace does not always arrive equally. Sometimes clarity frees one heart, while the other remains quietly aware of a fragrance that no longer lingers in the air. This piece explores emotional misalignment — the subtle distance that begins not in miles, but in pauses — when love fades for one, yet roots itself deeper in the other. A story about memory, imbalance, and the quiet moment we realize we are no longer standing in the same season.

The One Who Still Remembers

The air is clear now.

Too clear.

We told ourselves this was peace.

And for one of us, it is.

The days move lightly. Breath comes easy. Nothing lingers in the lungs. Nothing follows us home.

But for the other — clarity feels unfinished.

Not heavy. Not desperate.

Just… aware.

Sometimes, in certain light — late afternoon, when shadows stretch longer than they should —

the wind shifts.

And there it is.

Not the fragrance itself, but the outline of it.

A suggestion. A faint sweetness where nothing should remain.

One of us inhales and keeps walking.

The other pauses half a second longer than necessary.

That is how distance begins —

not in miles, but in pauses.

We still stand side by side. We still speak the same language. We still share the same sky.

But memory has weight only on one shoulder.

The fragrance fulfilled its nature — it bloomed, it lingered, it faded.

Yet for one of us, it did something else:

it rooted.

Not enough to hold. Not enough to demand return.

Just enough to notice its absence like a missing note in a familiar song that only one of us still hums.

The other does not feel the lack.

And that is no betrayal.

It is simply how air works.

It touches both faces, but warms them differently.

So we continue —

one breathing forward, one breathing through.

No accusation. No dramatic unraveling.

Only this quiet imbalance:

one heart remembering what the other has already released.

The wind moves on.

And for the first time,

we are no longer standing inside the same season.

Tatouie: There wasn’t anything I didn’t like except maybe more of a finality to the European Charter that was up to no good. I feel like they wouldn’t have left so quietly. Otherwise loved the story, great rhythm can’t wait to read more books.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
