SAATHI (The Companion)
On a rainy night, we see a husband and wife driving fast towards their home. Suddenly, their car is hit by a large truck. Both lose their lives in the accident. Their ten-year-old son witnesses the tragic sight of his parents engulfed in flames. Following this tragedy, he is sent to live with an elderly lady, his grandmother.
Eight years later... The boy, Mahesh, is playing football alone when he is pushed by a bigger boy who mocks him for being an orphan. Mahesh runs home, lies on his bed, and cries. He is not like other kids; he is mute and cannot speak. However, he is expressive and shares his thoughts through sign language. He has always been charming and excellent in his studies.
One day, his grandmother takes him to see the Republic Day parade on January 26th. Mahesh is thrilled to be out in such a vibrant atmosphere, surrounded by soldiers, participants, and food vendors. While exploring, he runs toward the soldiers but nearly gets hit by a passing ‘Jhanki’ (tableau). Thankfully, he is saved by a soldier named Naeem Singh.
Scared, Mahesh begins to cry. Naeem pulls a chocolate from his pocket and gives it to him, which calms him down. Naeem doesn’t understand why he felt the urge to save the boy, as he usually dislikes children due to a painful past. They stay near each other until the parade ends.
Before leaving, Naeem meets the grandmother and learns that she isn’t Mahesh’s biological relative, but a friend of his late mother who took him in after her own children abandoned her. Naeem is deeply moved, feeling the pain of a child losing parents so early in life.
When Mahesh gets home and changes his clothes, he finds a phone in his pocket—it had accidentally slipped in when Naeem saved him. The phone rings; it’s Naeem. He asks, “Child, are you the one who almost fell?” Since Mahesh cannot speak, he doesn’t respond, but his grandmother takes the call. Naeem visits their home to collect his phone.
A few days later, Naeem returns with a box of toys for Mahesh. Naeem begins to provide the fatherly happiness Mahesh had been missing. A beautiful bond forms; whenever Naeem has time, he visits, plays with Mahesh, and shares meals with him.
However, Naeem receives a letter from his officers—he is being posted to Leh for a year. Sad to leave, Naeem gives Mahesh a typewriter so they can exchange letters, since Mahesh cannot speak on the phone.
The Past of Naeem: While traveling to his new post, Naeem reflects on his past. He was once married, but his wife wanted a husband with a higher salary. While Naeem was on duty, she became involved with someone else. One day, Naeem returned home to find that his wife and their son, Krissh, had left him without a word. He was left shattered.
The Present: Through letters, Naeem and Mahesh stay connected. Mahesh starts high school and prepares for college. A year passes, and Naeem returns. They meet on Diwali; Mahesh has grown taller and brings Naeem sweets, while Naeem brings Mahesh a bag full of school supplies and desi ghee laddus.
Mahesh always fears losing Naeem, who has become a father figure to him. For Naeem, Mahesh is the reason he has started living in the present again. One day, Mahesh receives a call and rushes to the hospital. Naeem is there, covered in stitches. He had been attacked by enemies on a mountain and crushed by rocks but was saved by a fellow soldier. Broken and terrified of losing him, Mahesh refuses to leave the hospital and sleeps at Naeem’s feet.
When Naeem recovers, he explains that he cannot leave the army because it was his father’s dream, who also died a martyr.
Years Later: Mahesh is now grown up. His grandmother, being ill, wishes for him to marry. She chooses a girl named Riya—Mahesh’s childhood friend who had always helped him with his studies. Riya is simple and respects Mahesh deeply. They decide to marry on June 25th.
Mahesh sends the first wedding card to Naeem. Naeem replies with a letter and a beautiful box, instructing Mahesh not to open it until his wedding day.
On the wedding day, a postman delivers a delayed letter. As Mahesh reads it, he drops everything, jumps on his bike, and rushes to a graveyard. He arrives to find Naeem’s body being cremated. He is completely devastated.
Returning home, he opens the box Naeem had sent. Inside is a letter and the toy Mahesh had lost the very first day they met at the parade. The letter reads: “I always used to hate kids, but I don’t know how I formed such a beautiful bond with you. Even if I am not there, please get married. I cannot see you crying. I always wanted to be a father to you, but we cannot decide fate.”
After mourning, Mahesh travels to Varanasi to immerse Naeem’s ashes. To fulfill Naeem’s last wish, he marries Riya. Years later, we see a young boy running toward Mahesh. Mahesh has named his son ‘Naeem’ and has kept that old toy for him. They live happily, keeping Naeem’s memory alive.
